Molly caught it right away. Mason turned his head, hoping to avoid attention.
Wiona leaned in, eyes narrowing as she took a closer look. Her voice was sharp with surprise. “What happened to you? You actually got hurt?”
Mason had always been her go-to guy. When she first hired him, she honestly hadn’t realized just how good he was, not until he turned the cafe around in only three months. That’s when she knew she’d found someone special. Mason was a lot more than a business whiz. He had contacts everywhere, on both sides of the law, and could handle himself just as well as Conrad’s top bodyguards. Over the past couple of years, Mason had taken care of all sorts of messes for her, though he always drew the line at certain things. He never touched anything related to underground casinos. That’s why it was such a shock to see him hurt. Wiona couldn’t help but worry that he’d gotten caught up in trouble because of her.
Mason rubbed at the corner of his eye, looking a little uncomfortable. “Boss, the nightclubs have been kind of chaotic lately. I can’t share all the details, but you should steer clear of places like that right now.”
Wiona gave him a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, I don’t plan on going anywhere near them.” The last time she’d gone out to a club was to rescue Molly and Adler, and she’d only done it out of desperation. Now that her pregnancy was showing more and more, even a major crisis wouldn’t get her to take risks like that again.
Mason hesitated, then asked, “Have you met Eason before?”
Eason. The name clicked for Wiona. He was the owner of that underground bar, always hiding behind a mask. She also remembered she owed him a painting, part of the deal she’d struck to save Molly and Adler. The painting had been ready for ages, since Wiona hated the idea of breaking her promise, but Eason had never sent anyone to pick it up. So it was still just sitting at the cafe, waiting.
“Why are you bringing him up now?” she asked.
Mason glanced away, voice low. “He’s been making some big moves. After Sam and Roger went down, Eason’s looking to take over the Schmidt family’s businesses. My injury is kind of related to all that. Boss, I think you should keep your distance from him. Getting mixed up with Eason could cause real problems for you and Mr. Sullivan down the line.”
Wiona understood what he wasn’t saying. With the Schmidt family gone, the whole underground scene in Stonehill was getting shaken up. Eason was using the chaos to expand his own turf, and anyone touching those businesses was bound to get dirty. Now that she was the lady of the Sullivan family, everything she did had consequences. Even one wrong step could give others an excuse to come after her.
She had never planned on getting tangled up in any of this.
