Evander picked up a red knitted scarf, his touch gentle as he ran his fingers over the yarn. He’d spent over three months knitting it, ruining eight previous attempts. You could never truly understand the meaning of a heartfelt gift until you made it with your own hands.
"I've never celebrated a holiday with her. I just want to spend one Christmas with her. I'll come back after."
On the other end of the line, Elliot was practically pulling his hair out. "You're impossible! If you knew you'd feel this way, you shouldn't have let her go! Let me tell you something: if you want to win your ex-wife back, you'd better find a way to stay alive. Otherwise, she's going to end up with someone else!"
Evander grunted in acknowledgment and hung up. A few moments later, he dialed Lilith.
She was at the hospital picking up medication when his call came through. She clutched her stomach as she walked to the pharmacy window. "I thought you were dead. It's been ages."
"I'm not. Where are you?"
"Oh, so now you care? I'm at the hospital."
"I'm not worried about you. I have something I need you to give to Charlotte."
Lilith rolled her eyes and grumbled, "I knew it. You always choose women over your own family. If I died, you probably wouldn't even shed a single tear."
He chuckled. "I could probably manage one."
"I don't want your fake tears," she retorted, then asked, "What is it?"
"I'll come find you."
He hung up, and Lilith muttered a few choice words under her breath before hobbling out of the hospital. Stomach pain was a tricky thing; it was nothing until it was everything.
As luck would have it, she ran right into Judd.
She stood on the steps, forcing herself to stand up straight despite the pain. "Well, if it isn't Mr. Carstairs."
Judd frowned. "Is there something you need?"
"Nope, just saying hello." Lilith walked down the steps to face him. "By the way, Charlotte was in trouble. Weren't you concerned?"
"Do I need to report my feelings to you?" he said, walking past her and up the steps.
"I'm just curious," she said, following him. "I'm looking forward to seeing you two square off and finding out who comes out on top!"
