Two days later, Charlotte was discharged from the hospital. She and Wesley attended Zoe's funeral, but the service was nearly empty. Besides Sean, Wesley, and Zoe’s assistant, not a single member of the Donovan family was present.
She didn't know what Zoe had done to make her own family shun her, but the cold reality of her lonely end was sobering.
As Charlotte and the Rayburn men left the cemetery, Julian stepped forward to open the car door for them.
"Lottie," Sean said, "I know you didn't grow up with us, and you might not want to bother us with your problems. But I want you to know, you can never be a bother to your family."
Charlotte froze, a pang of guilt hitting her as she saw the worry in Sean's eyes.
She was a Rayburn by blood, but she had been separated from them for over two decades. In her mind, the Sterlings were the ones who had raised her. Even after the joy of their reunion, a part of her still felt like an outsider, afraid that if she caused trouble, her real parents would resent her.
"Dad, I'm sorry, I…"
"My daughter has no reason to apologize to me," Sean said, patting her on the back. "If anything, I should be the one apologizing. The family situation is complicated right now, and we haven't been able to give you the attention you deserve. I'm sorry if that's made you feel insecure."
Charlotte shook her head. "It's my own issue. I was worried you would reject me."
Sean’s expression was serious. "No parent could ever reject their own child. At least, your mother and I never will."
Charlotte smiled and nodded.
