Seeing the sincerity in her expression, Judd’s face softened with a hint of resignation. He took a seat.

“By the way, Officer Woods came by today. I took the liberty of letting them in.”

“Mm,” Judd acknowledged. “Did they find anything?”

Charlotte looked down at her plate. “They’re still investigating. The attacker is a professional with strong anti-surveillance skills.”

“It seems you’ll have to stay here a few more days, then,” Judd said, looking up at her.

She froze, her eyes meeting his for a second before darting away.

They ate the rest of the meal in silence. Charlotte never mentioned seeing the man who looked like Evander.

The next day, Charlotte and Judd arrived at the hospital one after the other. As they passed the front desk, two nurses watched them, whispering.

“She’s a widow now. Besides, a dead husband doesn’t stop you from moving on.”
