Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 409

As security escorted Tricia out, she surprised everyone by not struggling—though the glare she shot Charlotte was full of bitter resentment.

For someone used to always getting her way, she clearly couldn't stand the taste of defeat.

Charlotte calmly looked away just as Dr. Aldridge approached. “I had no idea that paper was yours,” he admitted. “I blame myself for believing her without checking the facts.”

He shook his head in regret. “If you weren’t Old Mr. Carstairs’ student, I’d be begging you to come back to Montovia with me.”

Charlotte offered a small, wry smile. “Back then, most people dismissed that paper as nonsense—even I wasn’t confident in it. But you gave it a chance to be seen. In the realm of neuroscience, I still have a lot to learn from you.”

Aldridge laughed warmly. “Honestly, I wish I could take you on as my student!”

A deep, familiar voice cut in, “Trying to steal my student right in front of me, Aldridge? Not very sporting of you.” The conference room was emptying, and Old Mr. Carstairs strode up to join them.

“You should have told me sooner,” Aldridge lamented, shaking his head at the missed opportunity.

Old Mr. Carstairs huffed, eyes twinkling beneath his bushy brows. “You never asked.”

As the two men continued their good-natured argument, Charlotte could only offer an awkward smile. In hindsight, she realized she’d never really explained herself to either of them.

In the end, she and Old Mr. Carstairs left the conference room together.

He noticed how distracted she looked—clearly, her mind was still on what to do about Tricia. “If you have things to take care of, don’t worry about me,” he told her, waving her off. “No need to see me out.”

Charlotte blinked, then gave him a grateful smile. “Thank you, Professor. I’ll be on my way, then.”

He made a shooing gesture. “Go on.”

Stepping out of the research center, Charlotte pulled out her phone and dialed Vera.

Vera, working the night shift, had only just woken up. Her voice was still thick with sleep. “Charlotte?”

“Did I wake you from your nap?”

Vera yawned. “It’s fine. I’m off tomorrow, so I can sleep in.”

“I need you to send me all that evidence you gathered before. It’s time to use it.”
