Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 235

Gentry lunged forward, ready to throw a punch, but Evander blocked Charlotte with one arm and swung his free fist squarely at Gentry.

Gentry staggered backward and crashed to the floor. He wiped the back of his hand across his nose and saw blood.

“Dr. Moore!” Charlotte broke free from the man behind her and rushed to help, but Evander caught her by the wrist. She spun around and slapped him hard across the face. “Evander, that’s enough!”

Evander’s head turned slightly from the blow, but he simply stared at her, his expression unreadable.

Charlotte hurried over to Gentry and helped him to his feet. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, don’t worry.” Gentry dabbed away the blood, then shot a glare at Evander. “Men who only know how to control women are the lowest of the low.”

Evander’s brow darkened. “Whatever’s going on between us is none of your business.”

“I think you’re the one who doesn’t belong here,” Gentry retorted. “You show up in a fancy suit with your perfect manners, but for all we know, you’re just some creep who gets off on harassing women.”

Evander adjusted his cufflinks and, oddly enough, let out a short laugh. This was the first time anyone had ever described him like that.

Just then Natalie arrived with a couple of security guards. “Mr. Howard.”

She glanced at Charlotte and Gentry, then gave Charlotte a respectful nod. “Ma’am.”

Gentry hesitated, startled by the address. Natalie’s “Ma’am” clearly surprised him as well. He turned to Charlotte. “He’s your...?”

“Ex-husband,” Charlotte answered coolly.

Gentry’s eyes widened in understanding.

“Ex-husband?” Evander’s voice was hoarse, his eyes burning as he stared at her. “I never agreed to the divorce.”

“Our marriage has only existed on paper for a long time now. What’s the point in dragging this out?” Charlotte took a steadying breath and met his gaze. “Evander, marrying you was the biggest mistake of my life.”

Before he could say another word, she took Gentry’s arm, ready to leave.

Evander called after her, “Charlotte.”

She stopped but didn’t turn around.

Charlotte had no idea how far she’d walked, or how long she’d been clinging to Gentry’s arm.

“Charlotte, it’s alright. They didn’t follow us,” Gentry finally said, breaking the silence. She snapped out of her daze and quickly let go of his arm. “Sorry—I dragged you into this.”

“Oh, come on, don’t say that. At worst, I was just sticking my nose where it didn’t belong. I probably deserved that punch anyway.” Gentry rubbed his nose, then added, “But honestly, I can’t help myself. If I see something wrong, I have to step in.”

Before Charlotte could reply, he asked, “But seriously, he’s really your...?”

Charlotte nodded.

“So you got married that young, huh? What a shame—”

A shame that his clean-freak friend never stood a chance?

“Yeah, it is a shame.” Charlotte managed a rueful smile. “But there’s no such thing as a second chance in life. Still, at least I figured things out before it was too late.”
