Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 234

They chatted idly for a few moments before Evander set down his wineglass and stepped out into the hallway, phone in hand to take a call.

“Mr. Howard, your wife… she isn’t at Riverspire Medical Center.”

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, Evander’s chiseled features were half-lost amid the neon city glow, his expression unreadable. “Are you sure?”

“I checked. Riverspire did receive her application, but she withdrew it two weeks ago,” Natalie replied, then hesitated. “The staff assumed she decided to stay with her original employer.”

Evander was silent for a long moment. “Then we’ll search every hospital, one by one.”

“And if she’s nowhere to be found?”

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, tapped one free and placed it between his lips. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

After ending the call, Evander thumbed his silver lighter, igniting the cigarette. For a moment, the swirl of smoke blurred the city lights outside. He stared into the distance, lost in thought.

The next day, Charlotte treated her first patient at the new hospital—a case of meningitis. Since medication could no longer control the growing abscess, she quickly scheduled surgery to drain it.

Two hours later, Charlotte stepped out of the operating room to update the patient’s family.

Gentry and Judd happened to be nearby. Gentry grinned and teased, “Looks like this is the first time our department’s had such a young and attractive lead surgeon. And she’s the department head, no less.”

Judd glanced over at Charlotte, offering neither confirmation nor denial.

Gentry raised an eyebrow. “You’re not going to argue with me?”

Judd almost never agreed with Gentry’s compliments about women.

He looked away, replying flatly, “Young and attractive—that’s fair.”

Without another word, Judd turned and walked off, leaving Gentry standing there, surprised.

After changing out of her scrubs, Charlotte found a message from Noreen on WhatsApp, confirming their weekend plans with a playful emoji.

Smiling, Charlotte began to type a reply when a man’s voice startled her. “What’s going on between you and Jonathan?”

She turned to see a tall, striking man leaning casually at the stairwell.

Slipping out the hospital’s back entrance, Charlotte only relaxed when she realized no one was following.

What on earth was Natalie doing at District General Hospital?

Did Evander send her to look for me?

But shouldn’t he be busy playing happy families with his beloved right now? Why would he bother looking for me?

Lost in anxious thoughts, she suddenly found a Bentley gliding to a stop in front of her. The window lowered, revealing Evander’s striking, inscrutable face.

Charlotte’s heart leapt into her throat. For a split second, her mind went blank—then she whirled around and bolted.

“Charlotte!” Evander called, already out of the car.

She sprinted for the curb, grabbing for a waiting taxi, but before she could climb in, Evander caught her from behind, pulling her firmly into his arms.

She struggled, desperate to break free.

At that moment, a voice rang out from down the street: “Let her go!”
