A cold smirk touched Cynthia’s lips. “So you’re one of his accomplices. We’ll investigate you right after we’re done with him.”
The lead secretary’s face tightened with anger. “Miss Tremaine, you shouldn’t let your personal vendetta against Mr. Shepard interfere with business. VistaSphere Group was already in trouble because of you. Mr. Shepard had to sell his own shares to stabilize the situation. Are you really so determined to ruin this company?”
Cynthia’s expression remained impassive as she stepped closer, meeting the woman’s gaze. “VistaSphere ran into trouble not because of me, but because Benedict’s lack of integrity drove our partners away.”
Secretary Rivera took a deep breath. “If you hadn't exposed those private matters, our partners would never have—”
“How much is Benedict paying you?” Cynthia cut her off sharply. “Enough to make you willing to go down with him?”
The secretary’s expression flickered. “Mr. Shepard promoted me to this position, and I am grateful. I will not let you harm his reputation without a shred of evidence.”
Cynthia laughed humorlessly. “Your salary is paid by VistaSphere Group, the company I founded.”
Before she could finish, the elevator doors opened, and a large group of security guards—nearly the entire company’s force—emerged.
Secretary Rivera hurried over to them. “What took you so long?”
Cynthia simply raised an eyebrow, a mocking smile playing on her lips as she gestured for her team to enter Secretary Rivera’s office and confiscate her files.
Just then, the door to Benedict’s office swung open.
Secretary Rivera’s expression immediately crumpled into one of a wronged victim. “Mr. Shepard! Miss Tremaine is accusing you of embezzling company funds and causing a scene!”
Benedict’s gaze, however, was fixed solely on Cynthia, his eyes a storm of complex emotions. “Cynthia, even if you’re angry with me, you shouldn’t have let it come to this. If word of this gets out, the stability I fought so hard to restore for VistaSphere will be shattered.”
Ignoring him completely, Cynthia motioned for Fred and the others to enter his office and gather the files.
Benedict raised an arm to block their path, his face grim as he addressed her. “Cynthia, this stunt will cause immense damage to the company. If your investigation turns up nothing, you will be held responsible.”
