“Seven years with a man like you… I regret every single moment.”
Cynthia Tremaine’s icy expression and sharp words made Benedict Shepard’s face drain of color.
The elevator doors slid open, and she stepped inside without a backward glance.
“Cynthia!”
Benedict moved to follow her, but his phone rang, stopping him in his tracks.
He pulled it out and saw Janice Ormond’s name on the screen. Frowning, he looked up at Cynthia just as her own phone began to ring.
Cynthia glanced down to see it was her assistant, Frank. She pressed the close-door button before answering.
A powerful sense of unease washed over Benedict as their eyes met. He quickly answered Janice's call.
The moment he put the phone to his ear, Janice’s frantic voice came through. “Benedict, that assistant of Cynthia’s—he’s taken my uncle!”
Benedict’s brow furrowed in frustration, and he lunged to stop the closing elevator doors, but he was too late. The car was already ascending.
“Miss Tremaine, I’ve convinced Charles Ormond to come with me, but his nephew, Johnson, spotted us leaving. He’s right behind us now. What should I do?”
Cynthia’s grip on her phone tightened. “Take him to the police station,” she ordered. Johnson wouldn't dare follow them there.
“But won’t that disrupt your plan?” Frank asked.
“Our first priority is to ensure everyone’s safety. We can’t proceed otherwise,” Cynthia replied calmly. “Since they’ve found us out, we’ll just have to move the timeline up. After you file the report, bring your team here.”
“Seize every document from the executive assistant’s office,” Cynthia commanded her team.
Benedict’s secretarial staff fought back, and the scene quickly devolved into chaos.
“Benedict Shepard has abused his authority, violated company policy, and embezzled corporate assets,” Cynthia announced, her voice cutting through the noise like a hammer blow. “If you continue to obstruct this investigation, you will be considered his accomplices, and the company will hold each of you accountable.”
The weight of her words landed heavily on everyone in the room. The employees who had been so defiant just moments before now began to hesitate.
Cynthia’s gaze swept over them, cool and unwavering. “From this moment on, anyone who refuses to cooperate is an accessory to his crimes.”
As the staff faltered, Benedict’s lead executive assistant stepped forward. “Miss Tremaine, Mr. Shepard is the current head of this company. You have no right to storm in here without any proof, disrupting our work and damaging the company's interests.”
