When Cynthia arrived at the Holloway Enterprises Cloudcrest City branch, Dominic still had a guest in his office.
The receptionist recognized Cynthia—she’d seen her with Dominic at the office a few times before. As soon as Cynthia stepped out of the elevator, the receptionist approached her politely.
“Good morning, Miss Tremaine.”
Cynthia returned the greeting with a friendly, polite smile. “Good morning.”
She’d be working at Holloway Enterprises for the next three months, after all. These people would soon be her colleagues, and it didn’t hurt to start things off on the right foot. A little courtesy now could make the coming months much easier.
“Mr. Holloway still has a guest in his office,” the receptionist explained, gesturing toward the lounge. “If you don’t mind waiting, I’ll let him know you’ve arrived.”
“Thank you,” Cynthia replied, following her toward the waiting area.
The receptionist returned to her desk and dialed the internal line to Dominic’s office, announcing Cynthia’s arrival.
On the other end, Dominic’s voice was cold and clipped. “Let her wait,” he said, then hung up without another word. Even over the phone, his irritation was unmistakable.
The receptionist hesitated, sensing his mood, but then went to offer Cynthia some water.
Inside Dominic’s office, Viola stood across from his desk, watching as his dark eyes lingered on a photo displayed on her phone—a picture of Cynthia, radiant in a wedding dress, smiling as if she hadn’t a care in the world. Viola’s own lips curled into a pleased little smirk.
“Nick, did you know Cynthia has a boyfriend here in Cloudcrest City? They’ve been together for seven years. They’re about to get married.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed, icy and sharp. He finally looked away from the photo, turning his gaze on Viola in silence.
Viola drew a shaky breath, trying to steel herself. “Nick, that’s not the point. The point is that Cynthia is deceiving you.”
Dominic’s expression remained unreadable. “And what exactly is she deceiving me about?”
Viola faltered, caught off guard by the question. Her mind raced, searching for a response.
“Wait… you mean, you knew Cynthia had a fiancé here? That she’s about to get married?”
Dominic’s patience was clearly running thin. “Yes,” he replied, his voice edged with annoyance.
Viola was stunned. He knew. So Cynthia hadn’t lied to him after all.
