Without hesitation, Cynthia nodded. “I’m willing.”
For the past ten years, her sister had carried too much on her shoulders.
It was only her own marriage she’d be sacrificing, after all—not her entire life. What was there to hesitate about?
Juliet gave a faint, knowing smile. “I thought you might refuse.”
Cynthia pressed her lips together, her voice soft. “Sis, the woman standing in front of you is twenty-seven-year-old Cynthia, not the seventeen-year-old you remember.”
“When I look back, I realize Grandfather wasn’t wrong. Kids born into families like ours enjoy privileges and luxury others never get a taste of. When the time comes to give back, it’s only right we shoulder our responsibilities.”
Juliet simply hummed in response and let her gaze drift away from Cynthia.
Noticing her sister’s silence, Cynthia spoke up quietly. “Have you already found me a suitable match?”
Juliet shook her head. “Not yet. I just wanted to hear your thoughts first.”
“Oh,” Cynthia murmured. “Well, if you do find someone, please let me know ahead of time.”
Juliet looked up, as if wanting to say something more, but in the end she just nodded. “Alright.”
Cynthia managed a small smile, though a touch of hidden bitterness lingered at the corners of her lips.
Maybe this outcome wasn’t so bad after all.
Juliet would never choose a husband for her who wasn’t at least a decent man.
The Holloway family, however, was out of the question.
Given the gap between the Holloways and the Tremaines these days, it simply wasn’t realistic.
She remembered the call Dominic had taken just before the party yesterday.
Cynthia hadn’t overheard the conversation itself, but she’d caught enough from Dominic’s replies to piece together the gist.
“I hear you’re looking to hire a special representative.”
Juliet nodded. “Yes. Things have been hectic lately, and I need someone to help manage the company’s affairs.”
Dominic’s gaze lingered on Juliet, as if he could see right through her.
“You don’t think this is a risky move?”
Juliet answered calmly, “Life itself is an adventure. Who’s to say that taking another path would be any safer?”
Dominic frowned, his tone deepening. “I could introduce you to someone for the position.”
“I appreciate that,” Juliet replied.
Dominic looked at her coolly. “She only has you—one person she can truly trust. Don’t take risks that would break her heart.”
Juliet glanced sideways at him. “Mr. Holloway, rather than lecturing me, maybe you should focus on clearing away the obstacles that stand between you and becoming her family.”
