“Congratulations, Susan! I saw the financial reports on your company. You’ve been doing great these past two years.” Natalie made a point of keeping up with business news.
“Really? I was so immature back then, I never appreciated how hard my parents worked. I’ve spent the last six months learning from my dad, and I’m finally getting the hang of it, though there’s still so much to learn.”
Natalie knew she was a hard worker. But what was the real reason for her call tonight? “Susan, are you calling about Jared?” Natalie asked directly.
“Well, yeah. I wasn’t going to get involved with him again…”
“Susan, I’ve cut ties with the Scott family. He’s not my brother anymore,” Natalie interjected.
Susan understood. “I know, Natalie. And honestly, you’re better off without them. That whole family is a mess. I think I made the right choice leaving Jared behind. I don’t need a scumbag like that in my life.”
“If I hadn’t given up on him, I’d probably be sitting at home miserable every day. After my dad yelled some sense into me, I finally realized that a man isn’t everything. I was trying so hard to be someone he would like, but I didn’t like myself, and I wasn’t happy.”
“Now I’m becoming the person I want to be, and people are starting to like the real me. I might be a little chubby, but I’m more confident than ever.”
Natalie smiled. “Are you calling just to brag, you silly girl?”
“What do I have to brag about? I’m jealous of how beautiful you are!” Susan’s voice was full of genuine laughter, and it was clear she was truly over Jared. After a moment, she continued, “Natalie, I received an e-vite from Jared. They’re getting married on the 26th of next month, and he invited me.”
