Hanley wasn't entirely confident either, but seeing Romaine acting so high and mighty, he wanted to knock her down a peg.
"You don't need to worry about that. Mr. Blackwood and my daughter have collaborated many times. As for his power and status, he might just have more pull than your entire family combined."
"Fine! Since you say so, our partnership stands. But if Ruby doesn't end up utterly ruined like you promised, I won't let you off the hook either."
Furious, Romaine dropped the threat, grabbed her designer bag, and stormed out.
Hanley and Gennifer watched as she slammed the door behind her.
"Dad, what if we need her help later?"
Gennifer stared at the door, her voice laced with hesitation.
Hanley let out a cold snort. "She's a failure who couldn't even keep her job at Starseek Research Institute because of Ruby. What exactly do you expect her to help with?"
"How dare she threaten me... ugh!"
He grabbed a teacup and smashed it onto the coffee table, the loud crash echoing through the room.
Gennifer jumped, giving Hanley a fearful look.
She wasn't sure if she was imagining things, but lately, her father seemed miles away from the refined, mild-mannered intellectual she remembered. He had become volatile and constantly angry.
Gennifer shrank back into her corner, keeping her mouth shut.
Hanley's rage bubbled in his throat. He downed several cups of tea, but it did nothing to quench his thirst.
Knock, knock—
Before Hanley could even give the order, Gennifer leaped up to open the door, terrified that being a second too slow would earn her a screaming lecture.
She pulled the door open, completely shocked to see Violet standing there. She hadn't seen her in weeks.
Gennifer's face paled. She slowly turned back. "Dad..."
"What is taking so long?"
Hanley snapped, turning his head in irritation. When he saw Violet's soft, pretty face, he froze, and then his anger skyrocketed.
"What are you doing here?! Didn't I tell you to stay in the apartment?!"
He shot up from his chair, strode to the door, grabbed Violet's arm, and yanked her inside. He peeked his head out to ensure the hallway was empty before violently slamming the door shut.
The office was suddenly suffocatingly tense, holding just the three of them.
Hanley glared fiercely at Violet. "Give me an explanation."
Smelling the explosive tension, Gennifer quickly stepped in. "Dad, since Mom is already here, I'll just drive her back when it gets dark."
"Gennifer, step outside."
Gennifer was terrified. Given Hanley's recent violent outbursts, she was genuinely afraid of what he might do to her mother.
But Violet was far calmer than Gennifer expected.
Hearing the dismissal, Gennifer froze, then looked at Violet pleadingly, shaking her head slightly.
