The old woman noticed Mira’s gesture and the flicker of anxiety beneath Ruby’s calm expression. Her gaze shifted to Cassian, and she guessed the reason for Ruby’s concern.
“Well, if Mira wants her mommy, this old woman shouldn’t be a mean old grandma.”
The old woman laughed and carefully handed Mira into Ruby’s arms.
Ruby wrapped her arms around her daughter, a sense of relief washing over her as she felt the solid weight.
She hadn't missed the look in Cassian’s eyes as he watched Mira.
It was a look of regret, of loss. She was afraid he would change his mind, that he would try to fight her for custody of Mira, and that was a fight she couldn't afford to lose!
Her life had already been so difficult. If it weren't for Mira, she might have died in prison, and she wouldn't be where she was today. No matter what, she could never hand Mira over to someone else.
Monica watched the interaction, her lips twisting in a sneer.
It was just a little brat. What was all the fuss about?
She could give Cassian a child, too!
Monica furiously clenched her fists under the table. Then, a flash of inspiration struck.
As if she had discovered a new continent, her eyes darted between the faces at the table before fixing on Mira.
The old woman had been polite but formal with Ruby at first, but she became exceptionally warm after seeing Mira. Perhaps it wasn't Ruby that either Grandma or Cassian wanted back, but the child she had given birth to!
Monica’s eyes lit up, increasingly convinced that her theory was correct.
That had to be it!
If Grandma and Cassian were showing favor to Ruby because of the child, then wouldn't they do the same for her if she had a child with Cassian…?
Monica's gaze burned, a fire igniting in her heart, making it pound with restless excitement.
Although the birthday dinner hadn't been elaborately planned, the table was laden with a dazzling array of dishes. The long table was more full of food than people.
“Please, help yourselves.”
The old woman smiled and gestured to the food, then used the serving utensils to place a piece of fish in Ruby’s bowl. “Ruby, dear, I know it’s been a while since you had Mira, but it takes more than a few days or months for a woman’s body to recover from childbirth. Try this fish; it’s very nourishing.”
Ruby smiled and didn't refuse. She took a small bite and offered a few polite compliments on the estate chef’s skills.
The atmosphere at the table was no longer as tense as before. Even the most active person, Monica Ashley, was now silently focused on her food. For a moment, it was almost harmonious.
