Cassian sat down as directed, glancing at Ruby before he settled in.
Her expression remained placid, showing no particular reaction.
Cassian's gaze dimmed, and the tea in his mouth suddenly tasted bitter and hard to swallow.
He had just registered it—Garrison could come and go from Southgarde Estate as he pleased, while he himself was always kept outside the gates.
“Madam, Mr. Veyne, someone has arrived!”
Bennett hurried in from the entrance to make the announcement.
The old woman immediately ordered the main doors to be opened.
Garrison appeared, dressed in a casual, cream-colored suit, holding a wide-eyed, curious little porcelain doll in his arms.
“My sweetheart!”
The moment she saw the child, the old woman could no longer contain herself. She practically jumped up from her seat and hurried towards Mira.
“Oh, look at those eyes and that nose! She looks so much like our Cassian. Darling, you are just beautiful!”
The old woman’s face was alight with excitement as she hovered by Mira’s side, staring into her dark, round eyes. Her heart melted completely, and all thoughts of whether the brooch on her chest was real or fake vanished.
None of that mattered. Nothing was more important than her precious great-granddaughter!
Garrison found his path blocked by the old woman and looked to Ruby with a slightly helpless expression.
Ruby stood up and went to support her. “Why don’t you return to your seat first? I’ll bring Mira over.”
“Mommy!”
Mira saw Ruby and called out in a clear, bright voice. The sound completely charmed the old woman, who nodded enthusiastically at whatever Ruby said. She even went back to her seat obediently, though her eyes remained fixed on Mira.
Ruby held out her arms to Mira, signaling for the little girl to come to her.
“Careful.”
Garrison gently passed Mira to her, his tone soft.
Standing together, with a height difference of about half a head, the handsome man and the beautiful woman made a surprisingly harmonious picture.
But to Cassian, the sight was an eyesore, like needles pricking at his vision.
He wanted nothing more than to kick Garrison out and warn him to stay away from Ruby.
But…
He could only tighten his fists, hidden under the table on his lap.
Ever since he signed the divorce papers, he had lost all right to be jealous or angry. His feelings were baseless.
