Chapter 178

Chapter 178

Ruby’s POV

Alice! Where’s my tie?!

Why are you asking me of all people on this earth?!

Because you unpacked my suitcase yesterday! Remember?!

Yeah uh wait, what?! Why would you put your tie in there?

Alicia smacked her forehead, groaning in frustration. She looked like a ticking time bomb about to go off.

My dear twin sister, a tie is part of the school uniform, she explained in a mockcheerful tone. I didn’t need it while we were home, so its place was in that rectangular box. Since you insisted on going through it to check for your contraband, that makes you responsible!

I swear I organized all your stuff neatly!

Then where is my tie?she pressed, visibly annoyed.

I don’t know. Why don’t you just buy a new one?

Alicia’s nostrils flared. That’s a waste of money. It’s the end of the year, Alice.”

Stingy much? It’s just a few bucks, girl, she muttered while putting on her earrings. I’ll pay for it, okay? Happy now?

Deal.

The chaos had settled, for the moment at least..I stood at the doorway, observing everything. The girls hadn’t even noticed I was there. Honestly, I thought they’d be better at managing things between them by now but clearly not. I was fairly certain the tie was around

somewhere.

I hadn’t stepped in yet to talk to them. I already missed my daughters and their little messes, even though they hadn’t even left the castle yet. Fortunately, there was still Elias and the youngest in the crib. I still couldn’t figure out why Elias hadn’t followed in his older sistersfootsteps.

Sometimes Elias and Killian seemed like two plants grown from the same seed. Neither of them liked socializing much, thought interaction was a waste of time, and often struggled to articulate their emotions. Elias always had a wellreasoned excuse whenever I asked if he wanted friends outside the castle walls. His answer was always the same; he simply didn’t need them yet.

Killian would always be right behind him, ready to defend him whenever he felt I was pushing too hard. Even so, Killian quietly worried the same thing. He hoped Elias wouldn’t grow up to be like him. It was clear in the way he acted and reacted. There was a creeping fear in him that made me feel sympathy.

Oh, Mom!

Alice’s call snapped Alicia out of her thoughts. She followed her twin’s lead, though a bit more awkwardly.

Hi. Sorry about the twoseason disaster in this room, she grimaced.

Alice brushed down her skirt. Where’s Dad, Mom? I didn’t think he was kind enough to let you out of his room after, ehem you know?

No need to spell it out, Alice. That’s giving me chills,” Alicia shuddered, a light pink blush spreading across her cheeks. I don’t need any visuals.

I sighed and rubbed my temples. I was painfully aware of my share of mistakes in all this. Having wise children is a blessing, yes, but that doesn’t excuse the shortcomings of a parent.

I’m really sorry for dragging you both into all this during what should’ve been a relaxing break,I said, my voice heavy with regret, offering them an apologetic look. You deserved more fun, not for this.

They exchanged a glance. Alice shrugged and gave a small grin.

I think no relationship is ever perfectly smooth. You can’t keep us inside a glass box forever, she said, her voice calm and mature

You and our famously tyrannical father are still the best parents anyone could have,Alicia added.

Father Mikhael would totally agree with us.

My eyes widened briefly. That wasn’t how I expected this conversation to go. Gratitude swelled in my heart. On the other hand, I feel sad that

my two little troublemakers are growing up.

That was a touching speech, girls.

I jumped, then quickly relaxed as Killian’s familiar scent surrounded me. I leaned back into his chest, and one of his arms wrapped protectively around me. Alice fanned her face, while Alicia placed her hands on her hips and rolled her eyes.

We’re not going to be swayed by sweet talk. The decision’s final, we’re going on our own with the driver!

What’s so wrong about a father taking his daughters to the dorm?

Absolutely everything!they replied in unison.

Killian huffed. You never used to complain before.

Mom, say something to him!

Hold on. What even started all this?I asked, baffled by the entire situation.

I’m just a man who loves his family. Apparently, your kids don’t approve of that title,” he grumbled.

Alice glared. “Don’t play the victim. You wouldn’t have been banned if you hadn’t planned to hunt down my classmate and get him expelled!

A friend doesn’t hurt another friend! That little bastard tricked you. Do you think I’m supposed to be fine with that?!Killian shot back, fiery with anger.

Before it could spiral into a fullblown and unnecessary argument, I gently pulled Killian away. My hand stroked his back, silently urging him to calm down. I wasn’t entirely surprised he was overreacting. That’s both the benefit and the burden of having a king as your person
