Chapter 162
Chapter 162
Ruby’s POV
“Darling, you need to get some sleep.”
I didn’t move an inch from my seat. My eyes remained fixed on the sight before me. Alice was still unconscious. Her skin was pale as if all life had been drained from her.
“How can I sleep when my daughter is lying there like this, Killian?” I replied helplessly.
“Our Alicia,” he corrected gently. “You’ve heard what the healer said. She’s exhausted likely from the stress of her busy schedule at the dormitory and her internship. She’ll wake up once her energy returns.”
My fingers clenched at the fabric of my clothes.
“I know. Just let me stay a few more minutes.”
There was a conflicted look on Killian’s face. He seemed about to argue, considering the late hour, but in the end, he relented. He nodded and stroked my shoulder. A kiss landed softly on the top of my head.
“Fifteen more minutes,” Killian said tenderly. “Then I’ll take you to bed. Remember, you’re carrying a child too. Alice would be upset if you fell ill. Her little sibling, too.”
“Alright. Will you take over watching her later?”
“Yes. I still don’t feel comfortable leaving our children in anyone else’s hands, even if they are people we trust,” he replied.
I knew exactly where that conversation was headed. Before leaving the room, Killian walked over to the edge of Alice’s bed. He gently brushed her hair with a tenderness that only a father’s love could express. Anyone could see the sincere affection reflected in his crimson eyes, the color of fresh blood.
Once again, the room was left with only me and one of the twins. Fear still hovered over me. I had already lost someone I loved and worst of all, I wasn’t there during their final moments. I couldn’t bear for that to happen again.
The healer said it was just a matter of her health. And yet, something inside me whispered otherwise. I kept replaying memories in my head. As far back as I could remember, Alice had always been a reflection of Alicia.
Though as she matured, she became less impulsive and more assertive than Alicia. That was a change worth admiring. After all, she was my precious daughter. Except for last night. Alice had behaved a little differently than usual, enough to make me suspect that something was wrong.
Anything could happen at the dormitory. I was a protective mother, Killian even more so. If the dorm ever caused harm our daughters, we would know.
So, what really happened?
I reached out and held Alice’s hand. I gave it a gentle squeeze, silently pleading for her to wake up.
“You can tell us everything if you’re struggling, Alice,” I began to speak, more to myself than to her.
“We’re your family.”
“Please, don’t carry it all on your own. We love you so much, sweetheart.”
I rested Alice’s hand against my forehead. I didn’t stop praying to God, begging Him to grant my plea. The heat behind my eyes built up, threatening to spill over into tears.
Just earlier, I had imagined how delightful the masquerade ball would be with the twins and Elias in attendance, along with the rest of our complete family. I had even contacted a designer júst for them.

Chapter 162
Amid my sorrow, I suddenly sensed Alicia entering her twin sister’s room, I lifted my head and saw a swirl of sadness and worry in her expression.
“Mom, let me stay with Alice,” she told.
Placing Alice’s hand back on the side of the bed, I turned to touch Alicia’s arm. My gaze softened.
“It’s alright. Your father and I are taking turns watching over her. You haven’t rested since you came back from your dorm, have you?”
“Actually I need to talk to you,” Alicia murmured, pressing her fingers together, the exact gesture I made when I was anxious.
“I shouldn’t have done it. I made a promise to Alice.”
Those same eyes she inherited from her father, glanced toward her unconscious sister. Her shoulders were tense.
“Seeing her like this makes me angry. So I’ve decided to tell the truth. We can fight about it later after Alice gets better.”
