Everything Waller mentioned, Willow had already considered herself.
But...
“He was capable of things that unspeakable in his last life—do you really think he’s any cleaner now?” Willow’s eyes were icy, her tone as sharp as a knife.
This was the second time Waller had glimpsed that cold, steely look in her gaze. The first time had been on that hospital security footage.
“But you said it yourself—he’s powerful, well-connected. How are you going to fight him?” Waller knew he had no right to tell her to let go of her hatred or keep her distance from this man, but he couldn’t help worrying she would repeat the same tragedies.
Willow’s reply was unwavering. “I can wait. I’ll bide my time until he slips up.”
“And if he never does?” Waller wasn’t trying to discourage her; he just didn’t want her risking everything on a desperate hope.
“He will,” Willow said with conviction. “I have something he wants. He’ll make a move eventually.”
“What is it?” Waller blurted out, unable to hide his anxiety.
Willow tilted her chin up to look at him. He stood tall and broad-shouldered, his features strong and clear-cut, radiating a kind of innate integrity.
“You know I’m a researcher now. So you probably know my field.”
Waller hadn’t known before, but after Willow’s death in her previous life, her father had grieved openly in front of him, finally revealing the truth.
“Drones,” Waller said quietly.
Willow nodded. “He’s got his own drone projects, even trying to work with the military. That’s why he’s hunting for anyone with expertise in this area.”
“But didn’t you just say he doesn’t know you’re a researcher?” Waller frowned in confusion.
“He doesn’t—not exactly.” Willow turned away, gazing at the city lights shimmering through the night. Then, in the half-light, she gave Waller a brief account: her secret identity as sci-fi author STAR, how Emmett had accused her of plagiarism, and how she’d used a micro-drone to clear her name.
