After lunch at a downtown bistro, Willow and her father Klein kept their promise and headed to the city's largest car dealership.
In the end, the two settled on a hybrid Ultra priced around thirty grand. Klein had just finished the wire transfer when a voice, dripping with mockery, sliced through the air.
"Well, isn't this Willow? Here to buy a car?"
That grating, insufferable voice…
Willow looked up, and sure enough, there was York, wearing a smirk that was every bit as obnoxious as Beasley's had ever been.
York had just returned to the country, and getting around without his own car was proving to be a hassle. So, he'd decided to swing by the dealership to pick one out.
He hadn't expected to bump into Willow just as she was closing a deal with an older man.
Willow, he mused, was truly something else. First, he'd seen her flirting with some young guy, and now, here she was, shopping for cars with a middle-aged man in tow. He couldn't help but wonder—what surprise would she bring the next time they crossed paths?
Still, York had to admit, Willow had good taste in men.
Beasley was in a league of his own, the sort you only meet once in a lifetime.
But even the man standing before him now, with his refined features and understated, scholarly air, exuded the quiet confidence of a man who had seen the world. If he bothered to dye away those faint streaks of silver at his temples, his charm could easily outshine any pretty boy.
Willow hadn't even had a chance to respond before York strolled over, a smug smile playing at his lips.
Klein frowned and glanced at his daughter. "Willa, who is this?"
He'd overheard the man's teasing "Willow," and it rubbed him the wrong way. The guy might look presentable, but Klein was instantly wary.
Willow had no desire to engage with York, but with her father watching, she didn't want to seem too rattled. The last thing she needed was for Klein to think she was still hung up on Beasley.
