Beasley ended the call, gave a few final instructions, then grabbed his coat and left the office.
It wasn’t the weekend, yet Willow had come back. Lately, her comings and goings had become more unpredictable than ever.
What puzzled him was that he hadn’t received any of her usual updates letting him know she’d returned to Cliffhaven Gardens. Did that mean she’d only just arrived today? Or had she actually been back for some time, staying at her father’s place? Maybe she was holed up in one of Lionel’s hotels instead?
He mulled over the possibilities as he took the executive elevator down and continued to puzzle over it all the way to the parking lot. Even after he’d picked up his car, he still hadn’t landed on an answer.
But at least now, Beasley was no longer so quick to assume the worst about Willow and the men around her. Ever since he’d chosen to believe she wasn’t the one who drugged him all those years ago, his attitude—and the way he approached these questions—had changed.
Still, the uneasiness in his chest hadn’t eased, not even a little.
Maybe, he thought, it was because he still hadn’t apologized to her face-to-face.
Which was exactly why he wanted to see her now.
Sanford had told him that after Willow left the police station, she’d taken a cab toward the city center.
In the security footage from earlier, he’d noticed Willow carrying two sets of men’s clothes. He guessed she’d bought them for her father, and maybe she was planning to drop them off.
Of course, he knew he could be wrong—maybe she had a different reason altogether. Right now, he just wanted to try his luck and see if he could catch her.
If he called, she definitely wouldn’t pick up. And if he texted, she wouldn’t reply.
Beasley’s hunch was right, but he was still a step too late.
By the time he arrived, the boutique had already been tidied up and was back to normal business—though after what had happened at lunchtime, there were hardly any customers.
He picked out a few suits at random.
“Sir, the Miss Sheffield you mentioned was here a little while ago. She bought some clothes and left—must’ve been about ten minutes ago,” the sales assistant said as she rang up his purchases.
