But she had never been deliberately cruel. Now that Isabel was about to divorce Adrian, she was letting it all out. Isabel knew Catherine had some grudge against Julian’s mother, but she wasn’t going to just stand there and take it.
But Evelyn was faster.
“Listen, lady, you’ve got a husband and a son of your own. You shouldn’t be sticking up for another man. The fact that you never had him and could only watch as he had a child with someone else means he was never into you. Besides, the man is dead. Who are you putting on this display of devotion for?”
“You!” Catherine’s face turned ugly as her hidden feelings were exposed. “What nonsense are you spouting!”
Evelyn smiled and wrapped an arm around Isabel’s shoulder. “Our Isabel is a lucky charm. Whoever she’s with will do well. It’s the Blackwell family that has no luck, understand?”
“You!”
“Quiet,” old Mrs. Blackwell cut in, her tone stern. “Are you trying to announce this to the whole world?”
Catherine had to shut her mouth. Her husband and child were present, and her husband's position was sensitive. She was already on suspension from work. If any ugly rumors surfaced now, it would be detrimental not only to her but to her husband as well. The Blackwell family’s reputation would also suffer.
“Isabel, I’ve scolded her. From now on, if anyone bullies you, you tell Grandma.”
Isabel smiled faintly. “You should just focus on resting. I can handle things.”
As they spoke, the elevator reached the parking garage. Old Mrs. Blackwell took Isabel’s hand. “You have to come back and visit me in the future.”
“I will,” Isabel said. “You are you, and they are them.”
Adrian’s brow twitched, but he said nothing.
As they were getting into their respective cars, Oliver pushed Mrs. Blackwell away and ran to Isabel’s side, trying to squeeze into the car.
Edmund stood at the door and blocked him. “This is our car. You’re not allowed in.”
Oliver started pulling at him. “That’s my mom! That’s Isabel, my real mom! Even if you call her Mommy, she didn’t give birth to you, but I’m her son!”
