Betrayed, But Not Defeated novel Chapter 206

"Idiot, shut up!" Zidane snapped.

Jennifer's eyes widened in disbelief. "W-What did you just call me?"

He took a deep breath.

She was still useful to him, so he couldn't afford to burn that bridge just yet. Forcing himself to stay calm, he said evenly, "The banquet is about to start."

Jennifer had planned to use this opportunity to put Daniel in his place. To her, this was just a minor setback, but getting to the venue was the priority.

With their supercar now in flames, they had no choice but to flag down a cab.

Showing up like this at a star-studded gala was humiliating. Jennifer's face was as dark as coal.

Zidane wasn't doing any better. The moment they stepped out, the waiting paparazzi swarmed, cameras flashing in rapid succession.

"Talk about frugal—showing up in a cab? What's the story here?"

"Maybe they're trying to promote public transportation? Hey, isn't that Daniel's wife? I heard things aren't going too well between them."

"Who really knows with these wealthy families? Just keep snapping. Zidane's got that leading-man look—he's holding his own against the celebrities."

The reporters murmured among themselves as they captured the spectacle.

Zidane's expression darkened as he turned to the doorman.

"What did you just say?" he asked through gritted teeth.

"Sir, please present your invitation. Otherwise, I can't let you in." The doorman looked at him.

Zidane was stopped at the entrance, and the reason was simple—they'd arrived in a cab. They were dressed in expensive attire, but who was to say it wasn't rented?

This was a star-studded charity banquet, and the organizers couldn't risk letting uninvited guests slip in. If something went wrong, who would be held responsible?

"This isn't an event for just anyone. You really think you belong here? So, will you walk out on your own, or do we have to make you? Well, my men aren't exactly gentle. If anything happens, well… not my problem," the security captain sneered.

Her face turned pallid, and she instinctively took a step back.

Zidane was trembling with rage. As the scion of the Wilcox family, he had never been treated like this before. He was used to being the one who made others uncomfortable, not the other way around. To be humiliated by a bunch of security guards was unthinkable.

But the guards clearly weren't interested in hearing him out. In front of all the reporters, Zidane and Jennifer were thrown out past the security line.

Daniel, walking with Charlene, shook his head at the scene. "You can survive bad luck, but no one can save you from your own mistakes."

Charlene hesitated momentarily.

Then, Mikayla stepped out and approached her. "Ms. Geller, you're finally here. Let's head inside," she greeted enthusiastically.

She was the driving force behind tonight's celebrity charity gala. Though she had been out of the spotlight for years, she still had old connections to rely on. With Charlene's financial backing, the event had come to life.
