Ryn's pov
We all were seated at the table waiting on Marlie to bring the tray of lasagna. The aroma was pungent and wafted through the entire house.
I shifted my eyes from Ace and Nate who sat far away from each other. Both mute as they glared at each other. Ace hadn't looked at me once from the moment he had come over.
His attention was strictly on Nate, scowling at him like he had stolen the last slice of pizza. I wasn't going to lie and say his blatant ignoring wasn't hurting me, it was and it hurt more than I could have imagined.
A chair scrapes beside me and I remove my attention from Ace to see that it was Mr. Smith gracing us with his presence. I sent him an inviting smile that he returned.
He sits down and adjusts the chair to his liking." Hello there Ryn, Nate and..." He speaks and looks at Ace lost and confused.
"Ace sir." Ace speaks up politely, something I wasn't expecting.
Mr. Smith nods, his glasses ready to fall off his face." Nice to meet you."
"Aye Mr. Smith your wife's cooking smells spectacular, I might just have to steal her from you." Nate teases. It was a routine at this point, he'd always tease Paul just to rile up the old man.
Mr. Smith glares at Nate, not liking the words he had just uttered. I stifled a laugh as his face began to redden from restrained anger. "My wife is not available."
"I'm sure Marlie would love to come home with me, isn't that right Marlie?" Nate continues to tease on. Earning a furious black look from Paul.
"Oh Nate you sure know how to tease an old woman." Marlie comes in and places the tray on the table giggling at Nate. I bit my bottom lip forcing myself to hold back a smile that was trying to burst out.
Paul shifts his angry eyes to his wife and huffs. "Don't entertain this nonsense Marlie."
She turns to her husband beaming from ear to ear. It was very noticeable that these two loved each other very much. Something I could hope for in the future.
My mind drifts to Ace and I find myself moving my eyes to him, only to see that he was already staring at me. I rapidly avert my eyes away from him, feeling embarrassed.
"Paul after all these years you still get jealous pretty quickly, when will you grow up? I married you for god sake, don't you get it by now that you're the only one for me, and I mean I stayed with your miserable ass for the past fifty years." She says and rolls her eyes.
At this I couldn't hold myself back and burst out laughing at an embarrassed Paul. He stuttered before giving up and looked away from us. I could see a slight smile stretch on Ace's face and my heart skips a beat from the sight.
The feeling had my laughing come to a halt and I remained confused at my sudden feelings. What the hell is wrong with me?
"Good one Marlie!" Nate praises as he pushes out his hands for a high five that Marlie happily obliged. I shook my head and glared at Nate to keep quiet before Paul blows up.
"But it doesn't look that way, not when both of you stare at each other like that." She taunts and takes a bite of the lasagna, looking giddy that she had caught us in the act.
I was uncomfortable with the conversation especially with Nate being there. It was obvious that he and Ace despise each other and I didn't have my hopes up that they will get along soon. If anything Nate looked ready to murder Ace as Marlie continued to tease us both.
"Mr. Smith how have you been, have you seen the doctor today?" I asked Paul, trying to get away from the conversation Marlie was persisting on.
Couldn't she leave my love life for once, it's not like I was thirty and still a virgin. If anything I doubt I'd remain a virgin for long, not with the way Ace pranced around.
Am I just admitting to myself that Ace would be the one to take my virginity? Seriously what was wrong with me?
"No not today Ryn dear, I will be giving a visit tomorrow. Don't worry about me Ryn I'm a healthy old man." He says smiling at me.
Paul suffered a stroke a month ago and his doctor insisted on making him come in for checkups regularly. He doesn't like hospitals but Marlie forces him to go and knowing Paul he'd do anything for his wife, as long as she's happy he is.
"Paul here is still very healthy and active, he proved that last night." Marlie says and sends a secret smile to Paul whose face splits up into a proud smirk. I cringed inwardly when I realized what she was referring to. Gosh I need this image out of my head.
Nate groans in disgust. "Keep it pg both of you, aren't you too old for that anyway?"
