Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around! novel Chapter 46

She turned to the gentle woman beside him. Her eyes sparkled. "Nicole, it has been a while since I saw you."

"I haven't seen it in two years. When… When did you grow so thin?" Nicole looked at her unusually thin chin. Just when she was going to say something, her eyes turned red.

Sterling looked distressed and quickly wiped her tears away. "Didn’t you just say that you’re happy to see Soph? Why are you crying again?"

"Are you even her brother?" Nicole glared at him as tears rolled down her face. "Soph is so thin now! Just how much suffering did she have to go through these past two years?!"

"You guys, let's take this conversation somewhere else." Sophia glanced around. There were too many people around them, and it was not a good place to talk openly.

If anyone was to slip out a few words to Charles, she could forget about the remaining relationship she had with the White family. Everything she had done so far would be for nothing.

The couple was kind enough to remember that she liked grilled fish, so they drove with her to a grilled fish place.

Nicole liked grilled fish too, but when she saw Sophia’s scar and sunken cheeks, she could not get her food down.

She picked up the chopsticks and put them down again. "Soph, these two years… Have you been having a difficult time?”

"Nicole, you think too much. Prisoners are humans too. How bad can they treat us?” Sophia's eyes dimmed. She smiled and picked up a piece of fish belly for Nicole. "I heard a lot of interesting stories while I was in prison. "

"Do tell." Nicole felt even more uncomfortable when she saw how unwilling she was to talk about the sad things, so she did not push her further.

Sterling did not try to conceal his emotions. He picked out the fishbones with a sullen face and proceeded to put the pieces of fish on both the women’s plates.

"There was someone who had scammed nearly 20 million gamers. When she was finally caught by the police in an internet cafe, she had only one request. She asked if the police could let her finish the game because she was afraid her teammates would scold her for quitting the game halfway.

"I also met a murderer who was super careful and managed to away from the police for eight years. But she went to a concert one night and got caught when she got scanned by the face machine.”

Sophia talked happily about seven or eight prisoner stories. Even though Nicole tried laughing from time to time, everyone knew nobody was in the mood to laugh. At that moment, her jolly look was mainly just for show.

"Stop talking about these things!" Sterling put down his chopsticks and asked with a horrid look on his face, "I heard that you were punished to kneel in the club and got molested. Is it true?"

Nicole nudged him with her elbow to hint at him, but he continued staring at Sophia, insisting on asking her.

"Those are just rumors. Don't people still say that I’m a vicious murderer?" Sophia paused and said with her eyes lowered.

Sterling stared at her for a while and suddenly picked up the beer on the table. He took a sip and slammed it on the table. With a deep voice he said, "Soph, I know you’re lying."

Sophia did not say anything. She took a piece of fish and put it into her mouth, but she could not taste it.

By default, her silence meant yes.

"Why don't you... tell us about these things?" Nicole had mixed feelings.

She was very aware of her temper before. Sophia used to be an arrogant wild child, after all. It seemed that she had gone through a lot to be turned into the person she was today.

"So what even if I had told you?" Sophia put another piece of fish into her mouth and laughed mockingly. "Should I just let you and Sterling worry about me?"

Slam!

Sterling slammed the bottle of beer down on the table so loudly that a few guests from tables away looked over with inquisitive looks on their faces.

"Quiet down!" Nicole twisted his arm.

"Since no one in City A will oppose Charles, I'll look for a new secretary for the municipal committee!” Sterling stood up with his hands on the table and snarled fiercely in a low voice, "I don't believe that this Harris guy can overpower the entire City A."

She did not know whether that apology was about using Sophia to get with Charles or an apology for leaving her behind.

When Sophia heard it, she hummed to signify that she heard her apology, and said nothing more about it.

"Sophia." Megan felt butterflies in her stomach. After hesitating again and again, she said cautiously, "About Miss Jones' legs, did you really... break them?"

Sophia’s entire body stiffened up. Just like before, she hummed softly.

"Miss Jones is so beautiful and gentle. She seems like a good person. Why did you break her legs?" Megan walked around to face her and asked.

“She annoyed me.” Sophia continued to sort out the clothes that she had just bought without lifting her head. "Also, I wasn’t planning on breaking her legs. I wanted to kill her. It’s too bad that she lucked out and didn’t die.”

Megan was silent for a long time.

Sophia continued to organize her clothes. After she was halfway through, she took out two clothes and put them on Megan's bed.

She did not like owing people favors.

"But I don’t think you’re that kind of person," Megan said suddenly.

Sophia paused for a moment with her hands on her clothes and looked up at her with misty eyes.

At that time, someone knocked on the door. Megan ran over to open it. Some clothes were handed over by her colleague. She took it and had her eyes wide open as if it was going pop out. "Are you sure this is for Sophia and not for the cleaning lady?"

"Yes, I’m sure. I was surprised too. It seemed as if no one else had their clothes changed except Sophia. If she wore these clothes, I’m sure someone will complain tomorrow!" The colleague rolled her eyes and left.
