When Sophia heard him, her pupils shrank and she looked at him incredulously.
Since he knew the facts, why did he not say anything just now?
Charles looked straight ahead without glancing a second at her as if he was unaware that she was looking at him.
Sophia stopped staring at him and she looked neutral again.
It was understandable because Leah was his beloved, so what was she to him?
"An actress?" Leah blinked and said innocently, "Charles, are you talking about Sophia? If she wants to be an actress, she’s got to first remove the scar on her face. Also, she must never let anyone know about her time in prison, or she’ll be in big trouble!”
"Her acting is so good. It's a pity if she doesn't work in the entertainment industry. The Oscar’s missing out on this potential actress." Charles stopped in his steps, looked down at Leah in the wheelchair, and chuckled before he continued walking forward.
"Charles, since you’re so handsome, why don’t you think about it?" Leah fluttered her eyelashes. "Although you being in prison in the past isn’t that ideal, there’s no harm trying. Perhaps you could even be hired as a PR lady or a cleaning lady.”
"What’s the point of playing dumb?" Sophia asked.
Leah looked at Charles's back with mixed feelings showing in her eyes. "Whether I mean something or not... It has to mean something or some of the things you love will be gone."
When she finished her rehabilitation, the attending physician suddenly called out to Sophia as the three of them walked out.
"What is it?" Sophia stopped in her steps and asked.
The attending physician glanced at her right leg. "If I may ask, your right leg… Is it alright?"
“Cripple! Cripple!” The shoutings from the prison rang in Sophia’s ears. Her face turned white as she tried to hide her right leg behind her.
She had tried her very best to walk normally but it seemed like the broken parts of her body just could not be hidden even if she wanted them to be.
"I didn't mean it any other way. I just wanted to ask." The doctor felt the awkwardness in the air and explained, "If I could take a better look and examine it, perhaps I could help cure it.”
When Sophia heard him, a thought flashed across Sophia’s mind as she thought that no one would willingly be a physically disabled person.
Leah lowered her eyes as a dark cloud floated over her head. She had seen countless specialists who had all said that there was no cure for her legs, so why should Sophia's leg be cured!
"There’s no need for that. She was born with it, so it can't be cured," before Sophia could say something, Charles interjected coldly. Right after he said that, he walked out of the door.
The light in Sophia's eyes instantly disappeared as anger began surging in her heart. In the end, it became reluctance.
She had no more strength left in her to fight Charles. The only thing she could do was to please him and stay away from him.
If he did not allow her to get treatment, so be it. Lest she... be interrupted again.
When she got into the car, Sophia had just pulled out a tissue. From the back, Charles said, "You shouldn’t waste it."
She tilted her head and glanced at his handsome eyes, while her curly and thick eyelashes trembled like a butterfly’s wings.
She let out a sound to signify she heard him, put the tissue to the front, and sat down.
"Charles." When Leah saw the situation, she frowned and quickly recovered. "I’ve given it a good thought. If Sophia’s legs can be cured, let her try getting it treated. Having me ruined alone is enough, don’t let it happen to her too.”
"She’s the one who hurt your leg. That's the price she should pay." Sunlight came through the car window and cast a circle of light on Charles’s handsome face and body.
"Why do you think of me that way?" Leah looked as if she was frightened by her. She continued with some grievances, "As your former friend, I just didn't want any problem between your family and you. I just wanted to help.”
Sophia's eyelashes trembled as she tried her hardest to ignore the cold gaze that fell on her. "Thank you for your kindness, Ms. Jones. It’s alright.”
"It's not like it’s some kind of a time-consuming and laborious thing. You don't have to think of it as that way.” Leah was forgiving and looked past her aggressive words. "I’ll talk to Uncle James. I’m sure he’ll let you see the kids.”
"You don't have to be so sympathetic." Charles suddenly replied, emphasizing the word sympathetic, which seemed to be mixed with a trace of sarcasm. However, no one could tell by his expression alone.
Leah's eyes flashed as she said softly, "I’m sorry for overstepping.”
After that, nobody said anything.
The car was weirdly quiet and the air felt thickened. It was as if the air molecules were denser from being squeezed together, making it harder to breathe.
Sophia calmly looked at Charles from the rearview mirror as he sat in the backseat and looked out the window. His face was indifferent and he did not look like he was recently provoked.
She tensed her back with her whole body taut like a bowstring, ready to shoot.
After more than ten minutes had passed, she wiped the thin sweat from her upper lip that appeared unknowingly once she knew he was no longer going to further embarrass her. Despite this, her back was still as taut as before.
The Bentley stopped in front of Dream Club and Sophia got out of the car. She watched the car disappear from her sight, only to realize that a layer of cold sweat had formed on her body.
"Soph!" Suddenly, someone tapped her on the shoulder.
When Sophia turned around to see who it was that tapped her shoulder, a hint of joy appeared in her eyes. "Sterling?!"
