Sophia’s shoulders slumped and cold sweat beaded her forehead.
Just when Sylvia had called her and told her so many things that seemed irrelevant earlier, Charles was taken away… She refused to believe that Sylvia had nothing to do with this!
“Ms. White, don’t worry about it, this isn’t the Harris family’s first rodeo, Mr. Harris should be out in no time,” Mr. Logan said to comfort her.
He babbled on for a little longer but nothing went into Sophia’s head. She merely nodded every now and then.
What happened this time was certainly nothing simple!
As if she needed any more bombshells, her phone suddenly rang. It was Zachary.
“Hello, Ms. White?”
“Yes, speaking.”
“It’s Zachary. I couldn’t get through to Charles earlier but I’m in the middle of something important now, can you please help me pass along a message to him? Please have him look at the accounts first, and if he’s able to resolve it himself, just settle it for now and I’ll see what I can do later.”
Sophia’s grip around her phone tightened. “Charles was taken away by a team of SWAT officers just ten minutes ago.”
The man fell into silence, seemingly deep in thought.
“Mr. Johnson, do you know what’s happening? Is that why you called Charles?” The uneasiness settling in Sophia’s mind was worsening by the second and she felt her chest pressing heavier.
“I’m still not very clear about the specifics but from what I have heard so far, there is a huge discrepancy in the Harris Corporation’s accounts and it is said that the missing funds have been used for illegal human experiments,” Zachary replied in a stern tone.
“That’s impossible! There’s no way Charles would do something so unethical!” Although Sophia was still unaware of the whole situation, she knew enough to believe in Charles’ innocence.
A look of suspicion spread across Mr. Logan’s face. He looked as if he wanted to ask a question but in the end, he kept quiet and waited beside her patiently.
“Ms. White, there are only two important things you need to know right now. Firstly, Charles isn’t the only person in Harris Corporation. There could be someone else behind this, for example, Master Harris, who might have embezzled company money to fund the human experiments, but since Charles is the company’s legal face, he would bear the corresponding punishment as well.”
“Secondly, even if Charles and the rest of the Harris Corporation have nothing to do with human experiment, from what I have heard so far regarding the evidence the police have, the odds do not look good for Harris Corporation.”
Sophia felt a surge of rage rush through her body and she suddenly felt unusually irritated. However, she knew she could not lash out at Zachary as he had nothing to do with this.
“Alright then, do you have any solution, Mr. Johnson?”
“The Harris Corporation is clearly the target victim here but whether it’s the corporation’s business rivals or the Harris family’s personal enemies, there are too many of them that I have completely no idea who it could possibly be. If we can pinpoint whoever is behind this, it might make things a whole lot easier!”
Sophia took a deep breath as she tried to calm herself.
She lowered her tone as she replied, “Sylvia Yates, Charles’ paternal grandmother.”
“Do you mean…”
Sophia did not want to elaborate further, and so she gave him a vague explanation. “Mr. Johnson, if you trust me at all, start investigating her.”
She did not know what exactly happened between Sylvia and Nicole so it was only best if she did not speak too much about it in case she passed on incorrect information and worsened things.
“Alright, I’ll let you know as soon as I find anything.” With that, Zachary ended the call.
Right then, Mr. Logan who was standing beside her could not resist any longer and asked, “Ms. White, was that Mr. Johnson on the phone just now? Does he know anything?”
“Oh, look at me, how can I talk to a child like you about these things! I’m fine, don’t worry about me,” Yvette said with a gentle laugh, “I used to think that Lewis lady was disgusting. In fact, I even fought with your Uncle Harris several times about it when we just got married. Back then, the Harris family called me narrow-minded. Look how things have changed then, that Lewis lady is the one they find disgusting now.”
Although she did not complain, Sophia felt dismayed, and the only thing she could do was give her a weak word of comfort. “Good and evil will always be rewarded.”
“You can believe in anything you want but not sayings like this. God doesn’t have eyes.”
Yvette nagged for a little while longer and reassured Sophia not to worry about Charles and to focus on taking care of herself. Then, the phone call ended in the midst of what seemed like an argument.
It sounded chaotic over at the Harris family’s side but Sophia could not hear what they were fighting about. She only heard the angry voices of Madam Jones, Mr. Harris, Master Harris, and a couple of other familiar ones.
Worried that Sylvia was up to something, she did not want to stay outdoors any longer, so she had her bodyguard send her back to the hospital.
By the time she got back, Sterling was already awake. Sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, he was staring blankly into the air as if he was in a trance. When he noticed her come into the room, he merely glanced at her before averting his gaze back to James who was lying in the hospital bed next to him.
Although he said nothing, Sophia knew that this series of events had almost broken him.
Sophia had never seen him like this, and her heart felt as if it was bunched up like a shirt tossing in a washing machine.
She strongly suspected that her sister-in-law had her difficulties but at the same time, she was afraid to tell him her doubts. If she turned out to be wrong, it would only cause him more pain.
“Dad will wake up.” Sophia patted his shoulder gently.
Sterling turned around to look at her with a dull expression on his face. “Do you actually believe that?”
No, Sophia did not. Two days have already passed and the chances of their father waking up were close to little. It was most likely that he would remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.
