“I’m going to be done soon. After I’m done, I’ll help you with your wound.” Megan went back to the mirror and picked up a cotton pad.
After she finished removing her makeup, she took the first aid kit and helped Sophia with her wound.
“It looks like your back is hurt. Please let me help you take care of it.” After she was done with the wound on the face, Sophia removed her uniform and turned her back against Megan in only her underwear.
Megan looked at the new wound that was as long as her middle finger and the old wounds intertwining on Sophia’s back. This was the first time she felt sorry for someone. “Did you get all these scars when you were in prison?”
Sophia made a sound of reply. She did not want to reminisce about the past. Those days were her nightmare.
“Then what about this new one?” Megan was afraid to hurt her. When she was cleaning the wound, she was doing it as gently as she could. Despite that, she could still see Sophia twitching from pain.
She thought Sophia would call out in pain and ask her to be gentle. However, Sophia did not make a sound. It was as if she was used to this.
Sophia’s eyes darkened. “I hit myself accidentally.”
Megan wanted to say that it did not look like it had come from an accident. However, when she was about to say that, she changed her mind in the last second. “Sophia, say, you only have that measly salary working here, and you even need to work double-time. Also, people are always stabbing you behind your back. Why are you still torturing yourself?”
Sophia rubbed her painful knees and did not say anything. She pressed her lips together tightly.
“Everyone was laughing at you when you were kneeling in front of the entrance, when you got slapped by James, and when you were asked to kneel by Mr. Jones.” Megan’s voice was soft. “You’re so talented. Anywhere is better than this place. Don’t you feel sad staying here?”
“Just pretend that I’m in love with the life of luxury.” Her wound had been dressed. Sophia put on her uniform and lifted her pants. She took the ointment and started rubbing it on her terrifyingly large bruise.
Megan pressed her lips together and put away the first aid kit. “Don’t tell me if you don’t want to, but why are you lying? Just let someone else worry about you in the future. I don’t want to care about you anymore.”
When she heard this, Sophia was taken aback. She smiled. “Let’s go eat the roast fish from that shop you like tomorrow. Don’t be mad.”
A person whom she knew for more than eight years said she only stayed in Dream Club to squeeze back into the circle she had been in before.
On the other hand, a person she knew for less than a month was calling her bluff because she said she wanted to indulge in the life of luxury.
This world was not what she expected at all.
She sat on the bed after she cleaned herself. In the dark, her tears started falling silently.
No one could handle being trampled on with no dignity. She was the same. However, just like what Clara said, no one could help her unless she pleased Charles and asked for his forgiveness.
She really did not want to do it. However, she did not want to be a janitor for the rest of her life either.
…
Sophia was wondering how she could get Charles’ forgiveness. However, the next time she met him, it was half a month later. He was here to talk business with a few people.
When he passed by her, he did not even look at her. He walked into the room while surrounded by a crowd.
Sophia held her rag and stood there for a while. She suppressed the bitterness in her heart. Then, she placed her tools back in the utility room. She went to look for the person in charge.
“What? You don’t want to be a janitor, and you want to go back to your previous position?” The person in charge stared at her and looked at her up and down. He said sarcastically, “Do you think you’re the boss? Do you think you can just do whatever you want?”
“You’ve misunderstood me. I just want to go back to my previous job for one or two hours. I don’t want to change my job.” Sophia hesitated for a while before taking off the jade pendant on her neck and handed it to the person in charge. “It’s from the Ming dynasty.”
“You’re welcome.” The person in charge dangled the pendant in his hand and shook it. “What about this?”
“It’s yours,” said Sophia.
The person in charge put away the pendant gleefully. He looked at it again and again. The more he looked at it, the happier he felt. “Alright, hand over your work to Laura. After you’ve changed your clothes, go to Room 5231. Be smart. Don’t offend anyone whom you cannot afford to offend.”
The manager had asked Sophia to go to room 5231. He did not know why, but this did not concern him, so he did not ask.
Sophia’s eyes lit up. Charles was in Room 5231. She did not need to make more excuses anymore. She gave a short reply and went out.
After the handover, she took a cheongsam from the team leader. After some simple makeup, she went to Room 5231.
Charles lifted his head to have a look. He noticed that Sophia was not wearing that loose and big uniform anymore, but instead, was wearing a light purple cheongsam with embroidered flowers on it. When she was walking over, her legs were faintly discernible. There was a slight seductiveness to her.
He tightened his hand that was holding the wine glass. He lifted the glass to his lips as if nothing had happened and took a sip.
“Sorry for disturbing,” Sophia said while lowering her voice. She walked over to Charles under everyone’s observing eyes.
Everyone was sitting around him in the room. However, none of them dared to get too close to him. She directly sat next to him.
Even if she intended to please Charles, he was still slightly restrained. There was not much space, and she did not dare to sit too close to him. Hence, she shifted closer to the man next to her. She was so close to him that it was as if she was about to touch him.
“Did I ask you to sit?” Charles’ gaze landed on her thighs that were almost touching the man. After pondering for a while, he thought that it was such a sore sight to behold.
