I pressed my lips tightly together, the color draining from my face: “Fine, there are nineteen days left. I hope you’ll keep your promise when the time comes.”

With that, I turned toward the kitchen: “I’ll make breakfast.”

I had originally just wanted to find something to do, but I didn’t expect to hear footsteps approaching rapidly from behind. Ferris’s voice was low and suppressed: “I’ll cook.”

I froze, turning back to see he had already walked into the kitchen.

Watching him stand in the kitchen wearing his expensive tailored suit, the sight was indescribably awkward and out of place.

Since he seemed determined to cook, I couldn’t be bothered to refuse.

I thought to myself–he won’t be able to keep this up for long. He’ll soon revert to his old self. When that time comes, my leaving will be natural.

To be honest, while Ferris was skilled at work, his cooking… was really mediocre.

A simple breakfast took him over an hour to prepare.

“If it doesn’t taste good, we can order takeout,” he said as he sat down.

I looked down at the bland porridge in front of me and the half–burnt fried egg, involuntarily remembering the photo Ashley had posted on Instagram–in it, Ferris had made a whole table of sumptuous breakfast, looking skilled and considerate.

“You… can’t cook?” I blurted out.

His face stiffened, and after a moment he said flatly: “Of course I can.”

As he spoke, he picked out the burnt half of the egg from his own bowl, threw it away, then pushed the remaining half toward me: “You eat this.”

I watched him cut open his own egg again, pushing the edible half to me. My gaze lingered on him a moment longer.

Noticing my stare, he pressed his lips together and explained: “I’m just… not very practiced.”

I didn’t ask further. I could tell he really rarely entered the kitchen.

I lowered my head to sip the porridge, but immediately realized something was wrong–it was salty to the point of bitterness.
