Similarly, Misha looked at the man. Although the couple didn’t tell her a lot of things, just in case she’d be forced to spill anything, she could surmise a few things.
For example, this strong aborigine was one of them.
She wondered how they got him to help...
Hesso saw the two staring at each other and gritted his teeth. "She’s mine!" he yelled, grabbing the woman’s shoulder to pull her close to him.
Enok ignored them and looked at Mafo.
"I will report this to our lord," he said. "If they do end up helping with our war, we might talk about future business—but I recommend you lower the price."
Before he turned, he looked at Misha again. "You must keep the ones alive," he said. "I will not buy merchandise that are more damaged than they already are."
Of course, many men’s greed knew no bounds, and Mafo was a prime example of this. "We will require you to pay half of that amount," he said. "What if better clients come along?"
"I clearly told you I do not have the money on me anymore," Otto said. "However, I can make an oath that, within the next three days, if the elementalists did prove useful to us regardless of their states, then I might buy them but for a lower cost."
Mafo showed off his teeth. "Then you better hurry back, then."
...
Where did Mafo get the confidence to be so arrogant despite selling ’spoiled goods’? Because if he were them, he’d really throw those infected to the orcs! Maybe those orcs could spread it amongst themselves!
In most aborigines’ minds, Meat shields were meat shields! Regardless of their conditions, if they did what they were bought for, then there should be no issues.
In any case, Enok’s team ushered the people into the carriages, with the weaker ones squeezing in as much as possible, while the stronger ones had the option of following on foot.
"As you can see, not everyone can fit," the Mercenary said, looking at the slaves in mixed expressions. He was laso disgusted—who wouldn’t—though he didn’t mean too much harm.
This was actually Senson from the Takoda Mercenary Team. Like Enok, they were hired here along with the team, though for obvious purposes, he didn’t come with them to escort the carriage.
Seeing many people who were ill squeezed together like sardines, their dirt, grime, and pus rubbing together, a lot of the Terrans opted to just walk in the end.
Senson nodded. "Very good."
Raz, who was beside them smiled, making some ladies blush. "Don’t worry, we’ll protect you."
They gaped, unsure why these people were being so kind to them. Their cynical selves actually felt more afraid, as if they were pigs off to slaughter.
Otto ignored the interactions and went to the only closed carriage there. He opened the carriage door, but just wide enough for him to see what was inside.
Inside were Silvia and Rowan. "I only managed to secure 2000 for now," he said. "And that’d leave a little over a thousand more infected, yes?"
"From our information, yes." This did not include the few hundred ’healthy’ ones who were placed in a different location. They could either be like Misha, who were women of high-ranking people in the territory, or they were strong enough to be directly part of the barracks.
"Hm... I’ll figure something out," he said. He then gave them his map, and pinned a location on it.
"Obi and a few other guards are there," he said. "He has a messenger bird with him. Get them to send this to Alterra as soon as possible."
"We will get as many of those remaining slaves as we can within 3 days."
To the surprise of Mafo and the others, "Enok" did not enter the carriage and just watched it leave with them. They watched as he headed back to the gates, stopping just in front of them.
"I’ll wait for a letter from my Lord in the post office," he said, looking at Mafo. "Can I trouble your people to alert me if a letter under Enok was sent?"
