"Ethan, those gifts are for your recovery. How can you ask me to take them back? Are you rejecting my gifts now?"
Natalie whined, her voice dripping with grievance. "You've changed. You treat me like a nuisance. We're supposed to be best friends. We're childhood friends!"
"You and Jordan are childhood friends," Ethan fired back, his gaze turning somber. "I was just your backup plan!"
He leaned back, massaging his temples. "I'm tired and I need to rest. I don't have the energy to entertain you. Please leave. Susan, show her the door."
Susan stepped forward, gesturing politely toward the entryway. "This way, Mrs. Lane. The young master needs his rest."
"I won't bother you!" Natalie insisted, stubbornly planting herself in the chair. "Go upstairs and sleep. I'll wait here until you wake up, and then I'll make us dinner."
She had absolutely no intention of leaving.
Reality had been hitting her hard lately. Without Ethan's public favor, her social standing in Cabinda had plummeted. Business partners who used to bend over backward for her now barely gave her the time of day.
It was a humiliating fall from grace.
York's warning had struck a nerve, and she knew he was right.
As long as Isabella was in the picture, Ethan would never look her way. With Ethan's backing, Isabella was practically untouchable in Cabinda.
If she wanted to eliminate Isabella, she needed to simultaneously charm her way back into Ethan's good graces.
She had to play both sides if she ever wanted things to go back to the way they were.
"Alright, alright, I'll head over and get her so she doesn't bother you."
Ethan's expression was stormy. "You're her husband. You're seriously just letting her run off to see another man whenever she wants?"
"She's with you, not some random guy. I trust you, Ethan. If it were anyone else, I'd care."
Jordan was completely unbothered because he trusted Ethan's character. Even during the years Ethan was obsessively in love with Natalie, he had never once crossed a boundary.
Now that Ethan was actively repulsed by her, Jordan had absolutely nothing to worry about.
In reality, Jordan was perfectly happy to let his wife obsess over Ethan. It kept her distracted, giving him plenty of free time to sleep with his secretary without her breathing down his neck.
