Darleen was livid.
Xenia had overheard the shouting through the receiver.
The thought of handing the entire Yelchin Group over to Starla filled her with venomous hatred. "If we give the company to her, what will the Yelchin family even be in Marina City?"
"Nothing. We'd be absolute nobodies."
The company. The money. All of it.
Not a single one of Starla's demands could be met!!
She wanted the family to surrender everything to survive this crisis.
How could they ever agree to that?
Xenia fell silent, the hatred for Starla burning so hot in her chest she could barely breathe.
"I'm going to find her," Darleen announced suddenly.
"Find who?" Xenia didn't process it immediately.
"Starla! I'll tell her to just kill me and get it over with!"
Wasn't this all about revenge?
Darleen refused to be the one who ruined the Yelchin family. If trading her life meant Starla would let the rest of the family go, she was willing to do it.
Pushed to the absolute brink, she knew someone had to pay the ultimate price to end this nightmare.
"Mom, no, don't be rash—" Xenia instinctively reached out to grab her.
But Darleen was trapped in a corner.
"Then what do you suggest we do? Tell me! She wants my life, and she wants Brinley's life!"
"If we give her our lives, if we let her vent all that hatred, she'll let the rest of you go."
Things had escalated too far.
Darleen realized that without blood, this wouldn't end.
And she refused to go down in history as the woman who destroyed the family legacy.
Darleen walked out.
Brinley froze, her face draining of color.
Guilt toward Faraday? Yes. Ever since she discovered Felix's true nature, the regret of betraying her late husband had been eating her alive.
And no, she didn't want to be the one responsible for the Yelchin family's downfall.
...
When Darleen finally found Starla, the younger woman was on the phone, unaware of her presence.
Starla was laughing brightly. "You're absolutely right, Mrs. Shipley. They actually think Kael and I have that kind of relationship. They're practically praying for you to come destroy me."
Darleen froze.
Her brain short-circuited. A loud ringing filled her ears as her body went rigid.
She stared at Starla in sheer disbelief.
Who... who was she talking to? Mrs. Shipley?!
