Furious and deeply shaken by Mrs. Shipley's attitude on the phone, Xenia and Darleen felt like they had been shoved off a cliff.
They had fallen from the peak of hope into absolute despair.
Far away, Annika was the first to lose her patience.
The phone rang. Before Darleen could even say hello, the Yelchin matriarch snapped, "Didn't you say someone was going to deal with that little tramp within days?"
"Has Mrs. Shipley arrived in Marina City?"
Darleen had promised it would take two days at most!
It had been three days since that promise, and Annika was practically living at the airport, waiting for the all-clear to return.
Hearing Annika's voice, Darleen's chest tightened. For a moment, she didn't know what to say.
"Why aren't you speaking?" Annika demanded.
"Mrs. Shipley... she hasn't come to Marina City."
They were waiting too. But if the woman refused to show up, what could they possibly do?
"What do you mean?" Annika's composure shattered.
"That witch seduced her husband! What is she waiting for? Why isn't she rushing over to destroy her?"
"We'd love to know what's going on too," Darleen said weakly.
For any wife, this would be a massive crisis. Yet Mrs. Shipley hadn't set foot in Marina City.
It defied all logic.
"Call her and find out what's happening. This needs to be resolved immediately," Annika ordered.
They were all hanging by a thread.
Starla was currently throwing her weight around the Yelchin family, using Kael as her shield. They needed to strip her of that protection.
Mrs. Shipley flaking on them was infuriating.
"I already did," Darleen admitted.
"And? What did she say?"
"She asked what it had to do with us."
Recalling the humiliation of that response made Darleen's blood boil all over again.
Sure, it was her husband who was seduced, so technically it didn't concern them.
"That was the plan, but now..."
Darleen trailed off, at a loss for words.
She had assumed such a massive scandal would guarantee Starla's destruction.
No one could have predicted Mrs. Shipley would react this way.
She was just as furious!
"You are a completely useless waste of space! You can't do anything right!" Annika screamed, slamming the phone down.
The insult echoed in the silent room.
Darleen's chest heaved, a burning resentment flaring inside her.
"Mom..." Xenia called out softly.
"She calls me useless?" Darleen hissed. "If she's so capable, why doesn't she go handle Starla? Wasn't she the one advocating we just hand Yelchin Group over to Starla?"
"She calls me the sinner of this family, but who is really at fault here?"
"I might be useless, but I never once considered surrendering the family company as a compromise!"
