"If I had begged you back then, I'd have been just as spineless. But I didn't," Starla said.
Faced with their viciousness, she had never bowed her head. Growing up in an orphanage, she was used to people looking down on her. But they had no idea that her spirit was unbreakable. If someone despised her, she didn't ask them for a thing. Bending the knee was never an option.
"It's pathetic people like you who truly deserve to be looked down on," Starla added coolly.
"Why must you humiliate me like this?" Brinley asked, the sting of the insult cutting deep.
Yes, she was groveling. What other choice did she have? Would pride fix anything right now? Her mother was pressuring her. Felix was demanding she protect the baby. Darleen beat her the second she was in a bad mood. Everyone who used to love and protect her was now screaming at her or physically attacking her.
"If you were in my position, you wouldn't be standing tall either," Brinley cried, tears welling in her eyes. "You won. You've completely won. Thanks to your manipulation, I've been alienated from everyone. The people who used to have my back are now my enemies. I have absolutely nothing left."
Did Starla really have to keep destroying her when there was nothing left to destroy?
Starla raised an eyebrow. "You're wrong. This isn't my manipulation. This is the result of your own reckless, self-destructive behavior."
The amusement in her voice made Brinley flinch.
Brinley paused. What?
"Your little secret wasn't exposed because of me. It was exposed because you decided to go to the hospital," Starla said plainly.
"And if you hadn't banned us from using the estate cars, I wouldn't have had to call Felix to pick me up!" In Brinley's mind, it always circled back to Starla's fault.
"And I restricted the cars because you deliberately tried to frame me for a vicious accident!" Starla fired back. "My retaliation is what brought your affair to light. At the end of the day, all of this happened because you couldn't stop being a monster."
