A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 504

"Just one sip. Try it," Herbert insisted.

Since he was so persistent, Starla figured the soup must be truly exceptional. She reluctantly picked up her spoon and took a mouthful.

It was surprisingly delicious. While the chefs at the Yelchin estate were good, she had grown tired of the endless soups.

"How did you know I like these things?" she asked again.

"I've always known," Herbert replied softly.

Starla stared at him. Always known? When had it started?

She thought back to her time with Fairfax. He rarely brought her to gatherings with his friends. Xenia was always the one trailing behind him at private parties, and on business occasions, it was Faraday, which meant Brinley was never far away. In the midst of their relationships, she had often felt like a complete outsider.

"When is Kael arriving?" Herbert asked, changing the subject.

Kael was a dapper, elderly man. Tall and thin, he was in his fifties but looked remarkably well-preserved.

"In a day or two, I think," Starla replied. "Fairfax is going crazy over it. He keeps telling me Kael is a married man and is threatening to go after him."

"Let him try," Herbert said dismissively. Did Fairfax really think he hadn't caused enough trouble? Threatening Kael of all people? Herbert couldn't fathom what Fairfax was thinking.

"I'm not getting involved," Starla said. Before, when she considered him her husband, their interests were intertwined. His success was her success, his failure her failure. But not anymore. Now, she was perfectly content to let him self-destruct.

It was almost over. All of it.

She turned and walked inside.

On the second floor, Xenia was wiping a window when she saw Herbert personally escorting Starla home. Her eyes glinted with venom, and she gritted her teeth in hatred.

Only after Starla was inside did Herbert have his driver turn the car around to leave. As they reached the main intersection, they came face-to-face with Fairfax's returning car, which had been stopped by the guards Starla had posted.

Fairfax's face was livid. When he saw Herbert's car driving out from the estate, a storm brewed in his eyes. He stopped his car right in the middle of the intersection, blocking Herbert's path.
