A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 296

Hearing Fairfax’s words, Darleen felt like she was about to explode. “Are you insane?”

In the face of her fury, Fairfax remained eerily calm, taking a slow drag from his cigarette.

Darleen took several deep breaths, trying to quell the rage boiling in her chest.

“She is going to pay for your brother’s daughter’s death,” she said, her voice shaking. “She’s going to prison! Do you want the headlines to read ‘Yelchin Family’s Young Mistress Jailed’? I can't stand that kind of disgrace!”

“Haven't we faced enough disgrace recently?” Fairfax retorted, his gaze cold. “What’s there left to be worried about?”

“Exactly!” Darleen shot back. “We’ve already been disgraced enough. We can’t take any more! Think about your niece! How can you keep a woman like that in our family?”

She pleaded, but Fairfax just stared at her, unmoved. The divorce agreement he had signed yesterday had left a void in his chest. Now, learning that the divorce hadn't gone through, that void was slowly beginning to fill again. The feeling was strangely satisfying, and he found he had no courage left to pick up a pen and sign another.

Seeing his silence, Darleen was frantic.

“Say something! Or just sign the papers!” she demanded, unnerved by his quiet resolve.

“Fate doesn’t want us to divorce,” Fairfax stated finally. “So we won’t.”

Darleen’s heart sank. “You’re mad! She killed your niece! She’s going to prison!” she screamed. She knew it. She knew coming back to get his signature again was a terrible idea. She had been right.

“Then I’ll wait for her to get out,” Fairfax said, his voice flat. “Is that what you want to hear?”
