A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1347

How could she...?

Fairfax slowly dragged his gaze up to meet Starla's. She sat calmly beside him. The purple flush of asphyxiation was already fading from her face, returning to its usual radiant glow.

She was perfectly composed. It was as if she were simply enjoying a quiet drive, except her hand was wrapped around the handle of the blade buried in his stomach.

"You..." Fairfax's lips parted to speak, but the movement sent a fresh wave of blinding pain through his gut. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe she had dealt the lethal blow without a fraction of a second's hesitation.

And in that moment of betrayal, his delusional mind cemented its belief: she must have been the one who killed Susanna.

"Do you even have a heart, Starla?" he roared, fighting through the blinding pain.

Starla's eyelashes fluttered. The corners of her lips curled upward into a slow, chilling smile.

"You were literally just trying to murder me. What kind of heart am I supposed to have for you? Tell me, exactly how much grace do I owe the man strangling the life out of me?"

It was the most absurd question she had ever heard. Just seconds ago, she had felt his fingers crushing her windpipe with zero hesitation. And now he was demanding empathy?

"You want my life, and you want my heart, too? Don't you think that's the biggest joke in the world?"

Thad yanked his gun out, aiming squarely at Starla, but before he could pull the trigger, she disarmed and incapacitated him with terrifying efficiency. Yardley's brutal combat training hadn't been for nothing. She might have hated the lessons, but she was a stellar student.

Watching Thad get neutralized in the blink of an eye, Fairfax stared in suffocating horror.
