A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1333

Listening to the mocking laugh in her voice, Herbert felt a crushing weight on his chest. She was too quick to see through the lies.

The trauma they had put her through when she first returned to Maxlandia had made her hyper-vigilant. She could connect the dots before they even finished their sentences.

"You're right. If it wasn't a lot, you wouldn't have called," she said smoothly.

"I'm sorry," Herbert whispered. "Just pretend I never made this call."

He hung up, his face draining of color. But what was the point of hanging up now? The damage was already done.

Rudolf felt the oppressive aura radiating from his boss but didn't know what to say.

"I've lost my mind," Herbert muttered. The promise of the five mines had completely blinded him.

"She hates it when anyone brings up Susanna or Fairfax," Rudolf gently reminded him.

Herbert knew that. Bringing them up was a guaranteed way to earn her disgust, yet he had taken the gamble anyway with a foolish sense of hope. And he hadn't even gotten a shred of information.

Rudolf sighed heavily.

...

Back in her room, Starla went downstairs and found her guard. "Luce."

"Yes, Miss."

"Kick Herbert out of Maxlandia. Right now. I want him gone tonight."
