Rudolf watched him make the call, his stomach in knots. He had a sinking feeling that their peaceful days were officially over.
...
Over at the Hoggart Castle, Starla was already in bed. After Yardley had stormed off, she had stayed behind to talk with her father. Elmer had been furious with his son, and in his anger, he had handed a significant amount of power over to her tonight.
Seeing Herbert's name flash on her screen, her brow furrowed, but she answered. "What?"
"Are you in bed?"
"No."
"Starla..." he began, his voice hesitating.
Her frown deepened. "What is it?"
"Are you going to kill Fairfax?" he asked, the words sounding choked.
She had once shared a deep history with Fairfax Yelchin. The fact that she was now so ruthless proved to Herbert that she had truly locked her heart away. No amount of past affection could sway her.
Starla's lips curled into a cold smile. "Why do you ask?"
"Can you really pull the trigger?"
"What are you trying to say?" Her voice turned icy. Were they lining up to call her heartless now?
