Yardley's chest tightened at the exchange.
"Find Fairfax," Starla ordered, locking eyes with Yardley. The temperature in the air seemed to plummet as she delivered the final words: "Shoot on sight."
"Starla!" Yardley roared.
"You know how this ends," she said coldly. "You've always known. One of us has to die."
During her darkest days in Smaro Town, when Elmer's men finally tracked her down, she had realized the truth: the world wasn't big enough for both her and Fairfax. She had even thought she should be the one to die, just to clear the path for Yardley and Susanna.
But why should she? She had sacrificed enough of her life for other people's happiness. Now, her own brother wanted her to pay the price for the Yelchins' sins.
It was absurd. She was done playing the martyr, even for her brother.
"Don't you touch him!" Yardley snarled.
"You're still saying things that make me sick."
"I said, don't!"
