A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1269

Yardley stood frozen, a cold dread washing over him.

David received a phone call. His expression turned grim as he ended the line. He walked past Yardley, offering a brief, highly disappointed glance.

Having served Elmer since Yardley was a baby, David practically viewed the young heir as his own. Seeing him prioritize a mistress over his own sister was profoundly disappointing.

Yardley's phone buzzed. It was Garret. He stepped aside to answer.

Inside the suite, David approached Elmer quietly. "Sir."

"What is it?"

"The girl... was intercepted and rescued by Mr. Hoggart's men."

Elmer's expression instantly darkened.

"It seems... Susanna... holds a significant place in his life after all," David noted.

That was exactly what Elmer had feared. The attachment was real.

"We've missed our window. Striking again will be difficult," David added. Yardley would have her under maximum security now.

Elmer rubbed his temples in irritation. "Is she living at the main estate?"

"Yes, sir."

"Tell him to move her out."

The Hoggart Castle was exclusively for family and those formally marrying into it. By ordering her removal, Elmer was signaling a temporary ceasefire. He wouldn't kill her today.

But it was only temporary. If she ever dared cross Starla again, he wouldn't hesitate.
