A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1095

Herbert looked up at Yardley, a mocking, sorrow-filled smile twisting his lips. "You're seriously talking to me about 'the point' right now? You're right, there's no point anymore. But I still don't want any of it!"

"Herbert!"

"This is all your fault! All of it!"

Herbert suddenly exploded, losing whatever grip he had left. After a night of dead silence, he aimed all his fury squarely at Yardley!

"You know damn well I never planned to hand her over to Licht!" Yardley shot back. "And I never planned to give her to Lazar either! I only wanted them to know she was in my hands so they would—"

"So they would know you could hand her over at any moment? Is that it?" Herbert interrupted fiercely.

"I wasn't going to give her up!"

He spoke those words with absolute, unwavering conviction.

But to Herbert, that conviction was nothing more than a sick joke. "Really? That wasn't what you were thinking before!"

Even to Herbert, it had always seemed like Yardley was completely capable of sacrificing Starla if it meant securing what he wanted. And now he was claiming he would never have handed her over?

Herbert obviously didn't buy a single word of it!

The accusation made Yardley's head throb. "You don't trust me?"

"I know you!"

Herbert's tone was laced with absolute certainty.

In his mind, it was entirely plausible that Yardley would have traded Starla away. And that very belief made the agony in Herbert's chest burn even hotter.

Yardley let out a heavy sigh. "So, you didn't trust me either."

No wonder that girl never trusted him. It turned out that even Herbert—his closest ally—didn't believe in him.

Herbert was supposed to be the one person who trusted him one hundred percent!
