Her bitter laughter made Fairfax's heart drop. The icy hatred in her eyes took him straight back to Marina City—to the days when she looked at him with that same dangerous, hollow glare.
It was the look of a woman who felt nothing but pure hatred for the Yelchin family. A hatred so deep that whatever love they once shared was completely buried under it.
The reminder of that hatred made his chest tight. It was the uncrossable chasm between them, and he didn't know how to fix it. Even knowing how much she despised him, he couldn't bring himself to let her go. He never planned to.
"Fairfax, I don't even know what to say to you anymore. You are a complete hypocrite," Starla hissed.
"What did I do?!" He was getting frantic now.
"You say you won't let me go!"
"I won't," he confirmed without hesitation. He'd give the same answer to God himself.
"Do you genuinely not know what stands between us, or are you just playing dumb?"
She had avoided bringing this up lately. The pain of losing her mother was still a raw, gaping wound. Every time she thought about it, it felt like she was being ripped open all over again. But hearing about Darleen and Xenia living it up behind bars had torn the bandage right off.
Fairfax's lips pressed into a thin line. He didn't dare answer. He realized she must have found out about what was happening in Marina City.
"Your parents murdered my mother!" Starla's voice shook with suppressed rage. "They were supposed to pay for that. But you..."
