Jeremy stared at Melody. "Don't you think you're being too reckless and careless?"
His words felt like Melody's head was being hammered. She clenched her fists tightly, and her chest also constricted along with them.
So in Jeremy's eyes, she had lived her past twenty years as a stupid fool.
All the opportunities that she had fought so hard for were now dismissed by him in a single sentence.
She looked at him, and memories of days past flooded her. However, in the end, she only asked quietly, "Jeremy, do you know what the stupidest decision I've ever made was?"
With an unfaltering expression, he answered, "It's now. You're giving up your job and dreams because of some stuff Denvin said."
The words Melody wanted to say were stuck in her throat. Those words gathered into a ball of frustration that became lodged in her chest, unable to find a way out.
She stared at her feet as she dug her fingers into her palm. Only when the pain brought her back to her senses did she slowly exhale that ball of frustration.
However, when she looked at Jeremy again, her usual crystal clear eyes were now colored with some other unreadable emotion.
Melody turned around. "Jeremy, you truly can be terrifyingly cold sometimes."
…
Melody left the hospital right away.
When Harold walked into the break room, the atmosphere inside felt like it was below freezing.
He inhaled a sharp breath and commented, "It feels like the morgue here. Why is it so chilly?"
Jeremy didn't even spare him a glance.
Harold plopped down beside him and sighed. "I bet you had a fight with Mel. Don't tell me you two are still breaking up?"
"No," Jeremy spat out before turning to leave.
Harold stayed seated as he stared at Jeremy's retreating figure with a smile.
"It's because you keep disappointing her, and you don't keep your promises. Too much debt can ruin your credit score, and frankly, it's the same thing with people."
Jeremy stopped in his tracks. He looked down, his face remaining emotionless.
"Tiffany has told me everything. I know that you've got a strong sense of accountability. However, you should figure out who you're really supposed to be accountable to.
"If you truly see Mel as your girlfriend, then your sense of duty shouldn't be applied to anyone else but her."
Harold cleared his throat before adding, "I mean, other than your patients, of course. To put it bluntly, those other people have nothing to do with you, especially not Krystal."
