A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 217

After Krystal finished speaking, she glanced at Jeremy and continued, "You know me, I have no interest in playing the third wheel. Besides, if your girlfriend comes along, she can keep an eye on both of us. That way, we can all stay safe."

Melody bit her lip. She could immediately tell that Krystal was making a jab at her, clearly making a mockery of the incident outside the operating room last time.

"No need," Jeremy flatly replied. "She can get home on her own." Then, he looked at Melody and suggested, "You can call Ms. Thompson. They just left a moment ago. They can still come back and pick you up."

Melody froze. "What about you?"

Jeremy briefly checked his watch. "I still have time to go back to the hospital and check on the patient."

Without even a simple goodbye, he then walked away with Krystal.

From a distance, Melody heard Krystal ask, "Why bother explaining to her? It's not like she'd understand anyway."

After a short silence, Jeremy finally replied, "I'm just avoiding trouble."

Melody was sensitive and easily misunderstood things. She wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed either.

Jeremy had learned that if he explained clearly right from the start, he could avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble later on. He didn't want to waste more energy dealing with her mood swings, as it would only exhaust him further and force him to compromise his own boundaries.

Suddenly, Jeremy's eyes then darkened slightly at the thought of that little puppy named Echo.

...

Since it was getting late, Melody called Ophelia.

Ophelia didn't look pleased when she came back to pick Melody up. "Is he really that busy? It's not like he's the only doctor in the hospital. And Krystal waited at the airport until midnight for him? How shameless!"

Owen quickly reminded his wife, saying, "That's enough. Krystal's just doing her job."

Ophelia rolled her eyes.

Worried they might start arguing, Melody hurriedly said, "Ophelia, Owen, I'm so sorry for making you drive back here."

Ophelia reassuringly patted her shoulder. "Don't worry about it. We couldn't leave you here alone at night. It's not safe."

After returning home alone, Melody felt hungry and made herself some ravioli.

After finishing her meal however, she found that she couldn't fall asleep.

As she sat on her bed, she took out the teddy bear full of notes and carefully wrote down another slip.

One staff member jokingly remarked, "Honestly, Mel, your hearing aid gives you a uniquely vulnerable look. Many models would kill for that kind of charm."

Alexis glared at the staff member. "Oh, you think so? Do you want to trade? If you don't have anything nice to say, just keep quiet."

Melody smiled and took Alexis' hand. "It's okay. Don't get upset. He didn't mean anything by it."

Alexis closely examined Melody for a long moment before she finally sighed. "Either way, you should really get treatment for your hearing soon. Some things can't wait. Even though the hearing aid has become your signature now..."

She paused, her expression turning serious. "By the way, I need to warn you. Your social media following is growing quickly, and your recent photo sets have been popular. I'm worried people might start targeting your hearing aid."

Melody was confused. "What could they possibly say about it?"

"They might accuse you of exploiting it for sympathy or say that you're capitalizing on disabilities for attention. Some might argue your hearing impairment makes you unsuitable to be a model. People can be very cruel."

When Alexis saw Melody's startled look, she quickly softened her tone. "Of course, popularity comes with criticism. The upside is your fees have increased. But please, don't ever reveal personal details online. Protect your privacy, or some fanatics might harass you."

Melody took the advice seriously. She rarely used social media anyway, so she decided to be even more cautious from now on.

But she never expected Alexis's warning to become a reality—and things got more terrifying than she'd imagined.
