That was why Orphy had gotten the idea that being a doctor meant that she could feed other hungry kids as well.
Sure enough, once they heard what Orphy said, another kid also chimed in, "I want to be a doctor too! Doctors are great! I want to give Taylor a shot!"
The kids were all under ten years of age, and their eyes were all sparkling when they looked at Melody.
Her heart melted. "Then you all need to study hard, and that way, you can be doctors too."
But they were kids, after all, and they couldn't quite hide their disappointment when they learned that Jeremy wouldn't be coming.
"Mr. Doctor promised he'd come today…"
Melody stilled, and she thought over her next words carefully. "You know Mr. Doctor is always busy with treating patients, so he—"
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over Melody, and she abruptly fell silent.
Melody looked up and, to her surprise, saw Jeremy standing there. He seemed to have come straight from the hospital since he was still wearing the same set of clothes from earlier that morning.
He calmly stood there and looked at her before saying, "I came right after the meeting."
Melody was surprised, but it wasn't exactly a joyful kind of surprise.
However, the kids around her were all ecstatic—especially the ones who'd mentioned that they wanted to be doctors. They were now surrounding Jeremy, firing off questions to him left and right.
Jeremy generally wasn't a fan of such commotion, so the moment the kids swarmed up to him, he instinctively took a step back. But when he heard them call him "Mr. Doctor", he stopped in his tracks. Then, he sat down next to Melody somewhat expressionlessly.
Melody turned to look at him and quietly asked, "Why are you here?"
This continued for the whole afternoon. Melody and Jeremy played with the kids separately and didn't say one word to each other.
Even the cheeky Orphy could tell that something was wrong. She blinked her eyes and curiously asked, "Melody, did you fight with Mr. Doctor?"
Melody was folding a paper airplane with Taylor just then. She froze when she heard the question and denied it immediately, saying, "No, we didn't fight."
Orphy tilted her head. "But you haven't looked at Mr. Doctor even once… And… he's been looking at you this whole time." Her voice had an innocence about it. "When the owners of the convenience store fight, this is exactly what they look like.
"Mr. Conry would stare at Ms. Sharpe, but she'd ignore him. Madam Callahan said that was because Mr. Conry did something wrong, but he was too embarrassed to apologize.
"So, Mr. Doctor, did you do something wrong too?"
