Melody had more to say, but Jeremy was already walking toward Krystal.
The patient standing next to Krystal was an elderly woman. Her son had just undergone a craniotomy last week, and she had been in tears every day since.
Melody clenched her fists as she watched Jeremy head over to Krystal. But in the end, she didn't say anything.
Andrew and Laura had repeatedly reminded him to take good care of Krystal, and Jeremy was merely helping out.
…
When Melody clocked out that afternoon, she went to wait for Jeremy as usual. However, it was only to find him still with Krystal.
When Jeremy saw her, he expressionlessly said, "I'll send Krystal home first."
Krystal was holding a bag filled with documents. She matter-of-factly handed it to Jeremy. "Can you help me carry this?"
Jeremy reached for it without saying anything.
The words "Let me help you" had been on the tip of her tongue, but now, Melody could only swallow them back down.
As Krystal's foot was injured, they could only walk slowly.
There were two exits in their department—one involved stairs, while the other headed straight out.
At the moment, the exit that didn't involve stairs was blocked by a patient on a stretcher who had just undergone a check-up. Thus, Krystal went straight for the stairs.
But the stairs clearly weren't going to be easy, and especially so in her current condition.
Upon seeing this, Melody's professional instincts kicked in, and she walked over to Krystal. "Let me help you down," she softly said.
Krystal held onto Jeremy's arm and slowly made her way down the stairs.
Meanwhile, Melody stood there for a while as she stared at them. Then, she slowly plodded after them.
When they reached the parking lot, Krystal automatically went for the front passenger door.
It was then that Melody finally spoke up, saying, "I want to sit in front." She remembered that Ophelia had told her that it was sometimes important to stake her claim.
However, this was the first time she'd attempted something like this. She was so nervous that she didn't dare look at Jeremy. She merely looked downward and said, "I get a bit carsick, so I don't feel like sitting in the back. Is that okay?"
Melody truly didn't know how to lie. She had completely tensed up and looked as if she had just done something bad.
Jeremy stared at her for a second, then he remembered how despondent she had looked earlier in the day. In the end, empathy took over, and he didn't expose her lie. Instead, he said, "I can send Krystal home first, then I'll come back to pick you up."
