Melody filled Tiffany in on everything that had happened in the department lately.
After a long silence, Tiffany gave her a strained smile that looked more like she was about to cry. "Melody, I don't think I ever told you, but when the director spoke with me, he mentioned that someone's been pressuring the hospital."
She looked discouraged. "Of course, the hospital's not going to offend certain people just to protect a low-level nurse like me."
She didn't say it outright, but Melody understood what she meant. She was suggesting that Andrew had said something to the hospital.
Otherwise, Tiffany wouldn't be telling her this.
Tiffany added, "I'm not trying to stir anything up between you two, but besides her, I can't think of anyone else who'd go this far. But Melody, you should be careful. She's clearly targeting you, too."
At this point, she wasn't holding anything back.
Melody had wondered whether the Wardolf family had stepped in, but hearing Tiffany say it out loud still made her heart sink.
No wonder every time she'd gone to speak with the director, the director always found some excuse to avoid the conversation.
Melody tried to reassure her. "Don't worry. I'll talk to the head nurse and everyone else—we're all on your side. The fact that the hospital's dragging its feet on the punishment? That's already the best-case scenario. We're all waiting for you to come back."
Tiffany pouted. "It's fine. I've made peace with it. It's not like I can't do something else. It's not the hard work I'll miss, it's the people."
Then, she suddenly changed the subject. "Hey, can you do me a favor?"
Melody nodded seriously. "Of course. Anything I can help with."
Tiffany looked a little embarrassed. She hesitated. "Could you maybe give me your friend's number? He doesn't have a girlfriend, right?"
The sudden switch in topics caught Melody completely off guard. She blinked. "Which friend?"
"Oh, come on, that guy at the ER! The one in the work jacket—remember?" Tiffany's cheeks flushed. That guy looked exactly like her dream type.
Melody choked a little, then quickly answered, "He doesn't have a girlfriend, but he…"
Jason had a stutter. She wasn't sure how to explain that to Tiffany. After thinking it over, she decided it was best to just send him a message and pass along his number directly.
It'd be better if he told Tiffany himself.
Tiffany beamed as she saved Jason's number. No one could tell she'd just been suspended from work.
Just as she saw Tiffany off, Lydia's call came in.
Lydia asked tactfully, "Melody, have we heard anything back from the food inspectors yet?"
All of the issues were associated with the Wardolf family.
Then, she thought of Denvin. After a long hesitation, Melody finally called him.
…
When she returned to the department, Jeremy was at the nurses' station. It looked like he was waiting for her. When he saw her, his dark eyes shifted slightly, and his voice was calm. "I need to talk to you."
Her lips were slightly chapped. His gaze lingered on the split in her skin, and his Adam's apple bobbed faintly. He was always restrained, ruled by reason, but something about Melody always brought out his greed.
It was never enough.
She was preoccupied, not in the mood for anything. Her voice was flat. "What is it?"
Jeremy said, "It's about Tiffany…"
He was going to tell her he could pull some strings to help—just this once.
However, before he could finish, she interrupted, "I already know what to do about Tiffany. Some people just think they can walk all over her because she doesn't have connections."
