Jeremy met Melody's eyes without expression. "You're here to defend her?"
"I just think the punishment is too harsh. She made a mistake, but she fixed it right away. It didn't cause any serious consequences."
"If something serious happens, it will be more than just a termination," he responded evenly.
"Everyone slips up," Melody argued. "She corrected it, and even the patient didn't complain. This is unfair."
"We should excuse her mistake because the patient didn't complain?" He repeated her logic, his voice dropping, clearly showing his disagreement.
"A medication mistake is negligence. Fixing it afterward doesn't erase that. Next time, it could cause more serious consequences. Who takes the blame then?"
Melody was left speechless by his question, even though she knew he shouldn't be making such assumptions.
After a pause, she said in a hoarse voice, "You're doing this on purpose."
She meant Jeremy and Krystal were punishing Tiffany for defending her that day.
Jeremy narrowed his eyes and commented in a deep voice, "That's nonsense. Think whatever you like."
With that, he walked past her.
She stopped him again and said wearily, "If you're angry, take it out on me. Don't drag innocent people into it."
Tiffany's mistake was actually very minor, almost negligible. At most, it should have been classified as an adverse event.
Yet somehow, after the discussion, the decision agreed upon was a dismissal.
Other than being deliberately targeted, Melody couldn't think of any other reason.
Tiffany was cheerful and easygoing by nature and usually got along well with everyone in the department.
It was only that day, when she spoke up for Melody, that she upset both Krystal and Jeremy.
…
At Monday's meeting, Tiffany's case was brought up again.
Melody, usually silent, spoke up. "I think the punishment for Tiffany was too harsh. Everyone at the nurses' station has made mistakes at one time or another.
"Why is it that other people's mistakes are tolerated, but Tiffany's isn't? Besides, she corrected it immediately."
"So you think giving a patient the wrong medication is a small matter?" Krystal asked coldly.
Melody paused and then explained, "I never said that, but she fixed it right away. The patient didn't complain, yet we're firing her? That's just not right."
"What would you call right? Letting her off?" Krystal's voice remained cold. She stood up, picked up a chart, and placed it in front of Melody.
She scoffed. "Ms. Wardolf, care to see how many deaths each year come from medication errors?"
