A day and a night of anguish, worry, and despair broke loose all at once. Kael, normally so tough and unyielding, was red-eyed and on the verge of tears.
Mira looked up at her brother. His eyes were bloodshot with exhaustion, and his whole body trembled with tension. A faint, tender smile touched her pale lips.
Her voice remained soft and weak, but it was clear and steady, filled with the gratitude and relief of someone who had narrowly escaped death. "I'm okay, Kael. I'm sorry I made you worry. It was Mr. Chance who rescued me. He fought his way onto Azurewave Island by himself, overpowered Damian Shore in a direct battle, forced his way through every trap and restriction, and freed me from the water prison. If not for him, I would have died there today."
Kael fixed his eyes on Jared.
In the next instant, he bent his knees and dropped to one knee before him without the slightest hesitation.
Thud!
His knee struck the hard, smooth coral-stone ground with a heavy boom, sending a faint shiver through the surrounding watery light.
His long dark-blue hair floated through the water like a solemn banner, hiding most of his face. Only his eyes and brow were visible, full of reverence and earnest gratitude.
He held his back straight, his posture deeply respectful. Though his voice shook, his words carried unwavering conviction. "Mr. Chance! You've given me and the entire Water Clan a second chance at life! You saved Mira, protected our clan's brightest young talent, destroyed Damian Shore's scheme to hold us hostage, removed the danger of our extinction, and safeguarded the tens of thousands living in Deepblue City!"
"I, Kael Maris, swear here and now that from this day forward, my life belongs to you! If you command me to go east, I will never go west. If you send me into boiling water or through flames, I will not shrink back. If you order me to die, I will not hesitate! I swear on the spirits of my Water Clan ancestors, my heart of the Way, and all my cultivation: I will never turn against you, disobey you, or forget what you have done for us today. Should I break my word, let my soul be extinguished and my road to immortality crumble!"
His solemn oath echoed across the square inside the city gate, carrying through the layers of watery light to every Water Clan member.
The gathered cultivators fell silent. No one spoke or made a sound.
They lowered their heads and bowed, paying the stranger who had saved their entire people the highest respect their clan could offer.
A profound, wordless reverence spread across the square.
Jared remained composed. He bent down, caught Kael firmly by the arm, and sent a gentle surge of chaotic force through him, lifting him to his feet rather than allowing him to remain on one knee.
