Jared's fist tightened slightly, and a cold glint flashed deep in his purple eyes.
But he did not attack immediately.
There were too many Demonic Cultivators across the city. He could not save all of them by himself.
He needed to find an opening and focus on the people who needed help most.
Just then, a scream came from an alley ahead.
It was a girl's voice, thin and sharp with fear and despair, as if something had cornered her with nowhere left to run.
It was thin and piercing, like a fledgling's last shriek beneath a hawk's claws.
Jared moved in a flash, sweeping toward the alley entrance like a gray gust of wind.
He pressed himself against the wall and looked inside. At the same time, his right hand silently closed around the hilt of the Dragonslayer Sword.
Deep in the alley, four Demonic Cultivators had been trapped by a squad of celestial cultivators.
Two were middle-aged men at Level Six Golden Immortal. A young woman was at Level Five, while the last was a girl who looked only thirteen or fourteen and had reached just Level Four.
The girl huddled behind the young woman, her narrow shoulders trembling. Tears filled her eyes, but she bit her lip hard and refused to cry.
The young woman stood in front of her with both arms spread wide. Fear filled her face, yet she did not retreat a single step.
The two middle-aged men were already badly wounded and covered in blood.
One man's left arm hung limp at his side, the bone clearly broken.
The other had a deep wound across his abdomen. Blood had soaked through his robe and dripped steadily onto the ground.
Even so, both men remained in front of the woman and the girl, using their battered bodies and broken weapons to form one final line of defense.
"Hold them off! Get Della out of here!"
The man with the abdominal wound shouted hoarsely. Blood kept spilling from the corner of his mouth, staining his chin and collar red.
Only half of his sword remained. Cracks covered the broken blade like a spiderweb on the verge of shattering.
His eyes had already begun to lose focus. He clearly could not hold on much longer.
The young woman gritted her teeth so hard they clicked and grabbed Della's hand, trying to break out along the side.
But the celestials had prepared for that.
A squad of around ten celestial cultivators had sealed both ends of the alley.
They wore golden armor and carried gleaming swords. Every one of them was at least Level Six Golden Immortal, and their leader had reached Level Seven.
Cold smiles hung on their faces. They looked at the four Demonic Cultivators as though they were prey with ropes already cinched around their necks.
"Run?" the leader sneered. "Where exactly do you think you're going?"
His laugh scraped through the narrow alley like a dull knife dragged across stone.
He slowly raised his golden sword. Divine sigils lit along the blade, and golden radiance flashed beneath the sunlight with an icy chill.
"None of you four are leaving this alley alive."
He lifted the sword higher.
A golden arc of sword light cut through the air with a piercing shriek, heading straight for the head of the wounded man in front.
The air tore apart in its wake with a low hum.
Knowing he could not escape, the middle-aged man shut his eyes and braced the broken half of his sword across his chest, ready to meet the last strike with his body.
Then a gray figure appeared in front of him like a ghost.
Jared.
He made no sound.
He did not even stir the air.
He simply stood between the wounded man and the descending sword light, like a wall that had risen from the ground without warning.
The Dragonslayer Sword left its sheath.
Purple sword light erupted through the narrow alley like lightning tearing the sky apart and slammed head-on into the golden arc.
